Notepad++ is awesome for those yet to make the evolutionary leap to textmate.

I assume you probably want something WYSIWYG though?

Also, you can always run a search on SourceForge if you're looking for free/open source software. You can usually find a solution there.

I use Prgrammer's Notepad because a tutor in uni recommended it once, and I haven't bothered looking for alternatives since it gets the job done.

Anyways, Netbeans is great for just about anything (and runs cross platform). If you want html I'd recommend downloading the PHP build.

I use gedit with the plugin called "nightshade" I think very nice dark colors that are easy to start at for hours on end.
