Thinking about "down-grading" my Macbook Pro 17" to a 13 or (new) 15" Macbook Air once they're available. Any Macbook Air owners here have any input one way or another? Any major draw backs to going with the Air? Etc.?

I have a late 2010 11.6". Good little laptop, plenty of power. A few of the downsides:

Macbook Air RAM is not user upgradeable (ie its soldered on the mobo) so if you want to max out the RAM you gotta buy it from Apple (it's pricey).

The SSD is not a standard 2.5" SSD. It's one of those "SSDs on a card" setups. Fortunately it is user upgradeable.

USB Ports are at a premium so if you have several external devices you'll need a hub.

Other than that I love my MBA, perfect portability, good battery life and Apple's legendary screens that I love.

I have the newest version 13" Air. Freakin Love IT!
I traded in 13" pro for it. Air has it all for me (I am a vagabond though).

- I can handle it like my kindle which really ends up giving you a lot of freedom when it comes to laying around using it. Sideways, upside down, whatever.
- Never gets hot... worst case scenario it is mildly warm.
- Instant startup
- Superquick for everyday usage.
- New version does have 2-usb's.
- Awesome battery
and of course travel. It really does make a huge difference if you live out of a backpack like I do.

downsides. I Imagine if you are trying to run some seriously heavy programs the speed might be hindered. Also, I slightly prefer the trackpad and keyboard from the pro better. With that said I have no plans of going back to pro.

this, except i moved from a 14 inch HP. Only limitation is RAM for some of the scripts I run, so I just run heavy stuff on my dedicated server. It's incredibly portable and makes getting shit done a joy.

Edit: yes it is also great to travel with and makes taking a computer along on most trips a no brainer. I honestly can't tell if it's in my backpack based on weight.

once you get one, every other laptop in the world will feel like a brick. you'll instantly fall in love with how light they are. Supposedly they're coming out with a 15" one in the next few months, which I'll be promptly upgrading to so long as it can have more than 4gb of ram. Though with an SSD, 4gigs of ram has been plenty for me, and I normally have a few terminals open, photoshop, and a dozen browser windows, along with skype and other chat shit.

They're the best laptops on the market

i use macbook pro (13), and took me a while to downsize from 17, sure happy i did that. will upgrade to air this summer, worked with one for a month (October last year) and it was fantastic.

i can deal with traps all day every day, this is some other level shit. :hollering:

where the fuck did you find this and how long have you been waiting for someone to post a question about macs?

Oh I was casually searching for hot monkey dick in Google images and this came up..

i think it's best if you wait for the macbook air 15'', it should appear in the coming months.

Macbook Air is really cool

To the Macbook Air owners, anyone had trouble dealing with the lack of a DVD drive or is it not really a problem at all?

I bought a USB external at Fry's for like $29. I think I used it twice in the last year. Once to burn an Ubuntu DVD for my PC and another time to copy a DVD for a friend.

They're supposed to do a refresh in April but I'm seeing discouraging info about the existence of a 15" Air even though I also thought there would be one. Looks like best bet may be a 14" Air targeted at the Asian market but I guess we'll see. Either way I'm waiting until the refresh.

Good shit. I'll probably buy an external then with the laptop just to be safe.

My guess is the new Air's will get Retina displays at the refresh. The current 13" macbook air already has a 1440x900 resolution. Better than anything on the market right now in that size, but retina displays are so awesome.

Same. It's a little bit of a pain but I hardly even use the damn thing. If you're somewhere with a good connection (unlike me) just download whatever. I'm just surrounded by $2 DVD's and crappy island internet that blocks torrents, and even I don't miss it that much.

A Macbook Air with Retina would seal the deal. Just got the new iPad (arrives in 4 days) so I guess that'll hold me over until the refresh.
