Any of you guys do CrossFit?

Sadly I have to walk through part of a crossfit gym to get to BJJ class :(

Just the other week i saw a guy with a arm cast on doing deadlifts. Then there's some dickhead who brings his dog to the gym. Gyms are already dirty enough without a dog roaming around...
 
If you want to dunk, you don't need crossfit, you need knowledge of plyometrics and you need a bigger squat. I can see it helping somewhat in the knowledge department, but so can a weekend reading starting strength and the vertical jump bible.

P.s. - I'm training to dunk too.

I know what I have to do but practicing plyo on my own at a regular gym made me feel akward.

The owner of the Crossfit I go to is super helpful and developed a program for me. We do a lot of squats, jump squats, dead lifts, depth jumps, ladder work, some plyo and against my wishes upper body work he sais is crucial.

Anyway haters gonna hate, I like it, I see results 15lbs and 5% body fat in 2 months and can grab rim with both hands now, I'll take it.
 
Started going a few months ago. The quality of gyms and people going really varies, some of the owners I think just took a weekend cert and then opened a facility. No thanks.

I found a place run by a powerlifting trainer/physical therapist. They are super anal (like papajohn's picture) about good form and avoiding injury.

Not a fan of Olympic lifting for time though. So I don't go fast, and if I'm the slowest because I don't feel like wrecking my shoulders or back on a timed deadlift - wtf - I don't care. All the rest like rope climbing, flipping tires, hiit/tabata, rowing is fun.

As for wanting to do Tough Mudder, etc, I believe it would help due to the hiit/sprinting/bodyweight exercises. I try and do 5+ of those a year. The short 3 mile ones aren't really challenging. The 5+ mile ones are fun though. Good luck!

There are so many conflicting opinions on this topic. You can't really have any confidence in the studies unless you download the original paper, get the raw figures and do your own analysis of the data. I'm married to a scientist, and she's shown me repeatedly how they can spin a dataset to say anything they want to.

Agree there are a lot of problems with "paleo", the biggest one of which is that's a lot of people's interpretation of it is essentially dogma based on conjecture about what people may / may not have eaten. Also, there seems to be an obsessive focus on eating steaks. Muscle meat is the least nutritious part of an animal. Organ meat is where most of the goodness is.

I don't have time to go through all these papers, so I've resorted to doing n=1 experiments on myself, changing a variable at a time and noting what effect it has on me. I gave up grains two weeks ago, and so far I'm very impressed with it - lost belly fat, better focus, and a lot less hunger.

According to this study:

Main Outcome Measures Primary outcome was resting energy expenditure (REE), with secondary outcomes of total energy expenditure (TEE), hormone levels, and metabolic syndrome components.

Conclusion Among overweight and obese young adults compared with pre–weight-loss energy expenditure, isocaloric feeding following 10% to 15% weight loss resulted in decreases in REE and TEE that were greatest with the low-fat diet, intermediate with the low–glycemic index diet, and least with the very low-carbohydrate diet.

Which means that for weight loss it's far from indifferent what kind of food your calories come from. In fact, the study shows that eating a high protein, low carb diet will increase daily resting energy expenditure with 300 calories or an hour of cycling every day.

About wheat, there may be many more people who are sensitive to gluten than believed without knowing it and dying from it:

A recent large study in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that people with diagnosed, undiagnosed, and “latent” celiac disease or gluten sensitivity had a higher risk of death, mostly from heart disease and cancer. (i)
This study looked at almost 30,000 patients from 1969 to 2008 and examined deaths in three groups: Those with full-blown celiac disease, those with inflammation of their intestine but not full-blown celiac disease, and those with latent celiac disease or gluten sensitivity (elevated gluten antibodies but negative intestinal biopsy).
The findings were dramatic. There was a 39 percent increased risk of death in those with celiac disease, 72 percent increased risk in those with gut inflammation related to gluten, and 35 percent increased risk in those with gluten sensitivity but no celiac disease.

And it’s not just a few who suffer, but millions. Far more people have gluten sensitivity than you think–especially those who are chronically ill. The most serious form of allergy to gluten, celiac disease, affects one in 100 people, or three million Americans, most of who don’t know they have it. But milder forms of gluten sensitivity are even more common and may affect up to one-third of the American population.

Btw, who says protein only has to come from meat? Legumes, beans and eggs are excellent sources of protein and fully available naturally.
 
Long time weightlifter here. Even though I don't do Crossfit, I have nothing against it. Why the fuck do you hate on something just because there are some dumb fucks doing it? While I agree that there is a big bunch of retards involved with Crossfit(so easy for incompetent wannabes to become certified trainers), the idea behind Crossfit is very good and that's the kind of training most people want. They don't care about being bulky and muscular but rather physically capable in a wide range of activities.

Also, even though I do strict pull-ups only, those who say that kipping pull-ups are bullshit/ridiculous and bad for the shoulder should go fuck themselves. Fucking ignorant close-minded pricks. Kipping pull-up is a standard gymnastics exercise and totally harmless to your shoulder unless you're over-training or performing it with incorrect form. Unless you're a retard, this shouldn't happen.

Stop being a butthurt tunnel-visioned asshole and accept the fact that there are different goals when it comes to weightlifting related exercising.

When I first started researching paleo, I thought it was awesome. We changed our diet to fit todays "paleo" diet. It worked wonders for us, in total dropped about 75# between me and my wife in 6 months. A few months ago I meet a cattle farmer that does paleo. Talking to him, his "paleo" diet is far different than what todays fad paleo diet is, the basis of his diet is omega-3 intake. After doing research I have started working on improving our omega-3 intake, it has been eye opening how little omega-3 is in todays paleo diet!!!
