Getting a new dedicated server in Canada since a new project of mine will be hosting sensitive customer data.

Not too many options for managed dedicated servers up here.

Found a local place with a beastly server for $140/month. However, it doesn't include any "managed" services like software updates and patches, and 24/7 tech support.

Just wondering if anyone can recommend a good 3rd party company for server management?

Thanks!

Your best bet is to contract out to a proper server administrator who knows the OS you're using. It'll run you around $100 - $150/hour. Assuming it's a single server, setup should only be about 6 hours max, then maintenance around 2 - 4 hours/month.

Can you recommend anyone?

That would be great for initial server hardening and monthly software updates. I'm also concerned about 24/7 monitoring and the restarting of services if necessary.

ionis.com

Not sure what he's doing, and whether or not he's accepting new clients, but he's in Vancouver and I've worked with him before. He's not cheap, but I can recommend him.

why dont you just use amazon AWS or something, surely they protect the data better than some neckbeard. The accounting platform I use (a Xero competitor) is hosted on AWS.

https://www.platinumservermanagement.com/
is the go to for all softlayer management. I used them for 8 years before taking everything in house.

i'll vouch for these guys as well, decent team of guys with very fast response rate

however if your server is ever compromised (by someone competent) there's not much these guys will be able to do and you'll have to hire a real sysadmin for a decent hourly fee to audit and resolve the issue

also which provider are you using out of Canada OP?

I've used Aswin from getmyadmin.com and highly recommend him. I found him on upwork to manage my linode servers. He's also done aws for me.

email: aswin@getmyadmin.com

ironically I also use this exact guy as well, can vouch for him

I use him for more complex issues like kernel panic, etc.

his skype is peartech.solutions

Consider going with CentOS and hiring a skilled sysadmin who really specializes in the O/S. The 'updating packages and restarting services stuff' is beyond basic and anyone can do that.

yum update
systemctl restart httpd

Really, it's pretty simple.

The real value is having a guy can figure out why things are hanging and actually fix the problem. Setting things like SELinux correctly is crucial, whereas the Jr. admin will just disable it all together because it's scurry. Watch the fuck out who you hire though. I recently trained a few Jr. admins to catch them up to speed. I asked them to configure sshd and secure the server to show me their skills. 2 out of 3 completely locked themselves out of the server completely lol.

Thanks for the suggestions!

I was looking at Platinum Server Management myself. Their prices are very reasonable.

Looking at https://esecuredata.com/ in Vancouver, BC. $139/month for their top server which seems reasonable. Another $40/month for cPanel and $29/month for support from Platinum and I'm all in for $208/month which is cheaper than I'm currently playing for a 5 year old server.

Linode offer cloud SSD servers in Canada and fully managed service for $100/month.

Not exactly what you're after but an option.

I vouch of PlatinumServerManagement.com too. We used to have hundreds of servers managed by them. We have a few still being managed by them.
