Anyone here have experience media buying?

All of the media buyers I know seem to spout off statistics like their memorization skills are impressive. I know they all spend serious cash on their softwares but what are the skills required to do it?

what do you mean by "real"?

I worked in a traditional advertising agency as a media buyer for print.

I'm not seeing where I said the word real.

The media buyers I work with, buy for print, radio, tv, and signage for a range of clients from small to medium size.
What did you do as a print buyer?

oops, I meant to say traditional instead of real.

Developing and maintaining relationships with the sales department of magazines and newspapers and negotiatiing prices and spots. Outdoor advertising was in my department too, and made some pretty badass projects happen there.

So other than using expensive softwares that tell me all my info, all I need to do is know how to sell/negotiate to media buy? Not discounting basic the product knowledge, but I already have most of that for my local media.

what "expensive" software are you talking about?

tbh, I don't know.

I've met with a couple companies that told me the softwares they use analyze media spots for the different mediums (TV, Radio, Outdoor) tell them which spots are the best based off data. You also have media tracking for all of your spots.

I'm told to use the media buying softwares the bigger companies use, which apparently is a must even if you are small time, will run you 5-15k/month,

you need marketing and penetration research, which is expensive, both inhouse and outsorced.

There is software, the most expensive ones are on media planning though. Otherwise, yes, the most important part of the job is to be really good at communication.

I'm not a big time media buyer or anything, but to me it sounds like you are getting way ahead of yourself. Why don't you use a RTB platform, buy some traffic and try to go direct to the site??? You can use Bevo as a tracking platform, not that I have tried this myself, but that's how most people start. I will be eventually crossing this path myself.

I don't think he means to buy online. That's why he asked for traditional media buyers.

Buying tv/radio/print is uber expensive. You should start with that in mind. On top of that, you should be prepared to pay for a lot of lunches and drinks and find cocaine/weed, hookers and whatnot. The last ones are both way though, it depends on what situations you're in. Sometimes you bribe, other times, you get bribed.

Ah, maybe I should read. Sorry for the retard post.

Well in that case, model what other people are doing. I think the #1 strategy is to look at what your competitors are doing.

I am definitely getting way ahead of myself, but that is how I got to where I am. I started a SEO/Web company after working at a heavy-equipment company for 5 years in sales&finance. 2 years later, I'm making more than my corporate salary and just got to the point where clients are seeking us out rather than the opposite.

The reason I'm asking this stuff is because I'm working with a media-buying company that is sending us massive accounts and I'm looking at what they do vs. the money they make like WTF?!

They manage massive media spends and make extremely good money. Yet, they bring me on pitches and their portion seems relatively easy vs. pitching online stuff. I'm just trying to figure out what the hard-parts are so I can decide whether or not to jump in.

I don't plan on making a media-buying company, but I have several clients that I could probably convince to let me place their buys.
