I'm heading to South America for the next 8 months to work on my Spanish and to travel around for a bit. I'll be in Buenos Aires for the next 2-3 months and then Brazil and then who knows where.

If you're in SA and wanna meet up - post here or PM me.

Speaking of South America...

Any tips on places to go. I'm in the mindset of jumping ship and am making a list of new countries I wouldn't have a problem with calling home.

Be careful in Brazil. Everyone is trannies there. No exceptions.

That's Thailand. In Brazil you don't find bitches, bitches finds you, lot's of bitches, believe me.

Just a word of advice TenCentPiece: security. I'm sure you know what to do. Not gona go into details but those are 2 fucked up countries in some aspects.

I don't usually bum around in Brasil, but when I do I do it in Florianpolis (Floripa). :)

Other places to visit:

Blumenau (home to world's 2nd largest Oktoberfest)
Gramado

There are a lot of small German/Italian towns in southern Brasil. Southern Brasil is generally safer than the rest of Brasil. It's more European (Italian, Portuguese, German).

Argentina:
Mendoza (wine country)
Bariloche (ski town, very nice)
Ushuaia (Tierra del Fuego, not always as cold as you'd expect)

Yeah I'll be careful, to be honest people have said this about a lot of countries I've visited and I've never had a problem - but SA is supposed to be the wild west and I've had a few friends who had their buses robbed by guys with AK's so I think the risk is a little more real there.

On the bright side - I'm fairly young and I dress like I am almost homeless so I am generally not the ideal target for scammers/robbers.

Any specific advice?

Where do you plan on staying? Renting an apartment?

I'm doing a homestay for the first month because my spanish is truly awful - it's through the spanish school I'm studying with so hopefully it's decent. After that I'll probably rent an apartment in Palmero area. Looks to be reasonably cheap $600USD/month (and that's whitey prices, so probably can get it down to around $450USD/month) with internet and ultities included.

Jesus we always have the same travel schedule.

Haha, let's actually meet up this time. I'm in Madrid till the 7th and then Buenos Aires until at least the start of Jan.

Just a note, the wild west didn't actually exist. It's based on hollywood movies, not real historical events. The west was fairly civilized, all things considered.

Asia vs South America for those of you who have tried both?

I prefer South America. The food is better in Brazil. Pretty bland in Argentina and Uruguay.

Check out Florianopolis. It's about 75%+ European. This is from a beach on the island. Richer crowd. Lots of Argentinians.

I prefer Praia Mole, though.
