Anybody own a Jeep Wrangler?

Have you considered a 97 Land Cruiser? It's the last year of the 80 series and it's built like a tank. You can get all kinds of aftermarket bolt-ons. There's also a few mods for the A/C to get your interior close to freezing. My favorite A/C feature is the vent below the steering wheel; its amazing how cool you feel if forced cold air is directed at the baby makers.

I've never seen a tent like that. That's pretty sick. I'd be afraid I would tip over the Jeep with a late night bump-and-grind session though.

Yeah.. when I was in high school I really wanted a Wrangler. Of course I was living in key west at the time too...

I ended up with a jeep cherokee since we needed the space and storage (scouting). So while I can not talk about the readability of the wrangler. I can say that my Cherokee that's now 10yrs old and its only needed like $400 in repairs. Dealing with the power windows and ac. So for reliability I think the brand is great, but I expected that from a car that helped win a world war. Though I am quite sure the quality has gone down a bit from then....

IMHO you should get a 4Runner. But I'm sure you can still have fun with a Jeep.

I had a little incident on Carnage Canyon. We took the wrong line coming down Fireman's Hill and rested it on the nose. We actually started to go over, smacked the tree (denting the roof), and came to balance as you see it sitting here. No trick photography, either. Quite a ride, I must say!

WARNING: Just took some stuff before I start affiliating so this post may be long as dick.

To be honest all of the negative things you guys are talking about makes me want a TJ even more. I'm in college, so yes this Jeep would be my daily driver. However it's so hard to look at pictures like the one I posted and NOT be excited about owning one and going out on camping trips or mud ridding etc.

I understand what you guys are saying about most Jeep drivers looking like douchebags, however I don't give a shit what people think about me or what I look like in my car. For fucks sake, I drive a POS Civic with a subwoofer in it. I'm sure I look dumb as hell when I'm at an intersection in a < $3000 car with the music thumping and the windows down.

About the recommendation on the 4Runner and Land Cruiser; I absolutely love those vehicles and would definitely buy one, however I think the convertible nature of a Wrangler would be so much more badass. Plus everybody around here has a 4Runner, and the only Land Crusier's I can find have > 150,000 miles. That might not be an issue as far as reliability goes because I know Toyota's are tanks, however I'd like to own a car with < 100,000 miles for once.

To be honest I've never been into wheeling before. In a perfect world I'd (realistically) own an Evo or something along those lines (not a ricer mind you, loved these cars way before Fast and the Furious). I like to go fast, take driving technique very seriously, all of my family drag races, etc, however going fast in cars is WAY more expensive than you'd think.

I'm terrified on 2 wheels and all of my friends have motorcycles, so that can't fix my adrenaline needs. Then I found out about kart racing and since I live in Louisiana it's all circle track bullshit so that doesn't work. So what I'm left with is getting my adrenaline fix with wheeling, plus I love the outdoors so bam that lead me to Jeeps.

This might sound gay, but I was in Boy Scouts and made it all the way to Eagle Scout. I absolutely fucking hated the paper work side of it all, the merit badgets, etc. However you can't talk shit about some of the trips I went on. 75, 100, 150 mile backpacking trips in beautiful mountain ranges, 150 mile canoe trips in Canada, call me a Boy Scout faggot all you want but those were some of the most fun I've ever had. I want to do stuff like that again, and I think a Jeep would be perfect.

Right now I want to take something like the Jeep I originally posted and spend a few weeks in the High Sierra of California. Check this shit out, found it on a Jeep forum:

They're not bad as a second car that you can take camping, fishing, hunting, or mild off roading. They dont handle for shit, they also feel a little awkward when you drive them (i think its the short wheel base). But, they do very good in the sticks, lots of low end power (depending on the motor you get). Overall i would say keep the Civic as a daily driver, and get the Jeep as a weekend outdoor car.

Congrats on Eagle Scout. My brother got that far. It's definitely significant of a lot of experience in scouting and quite a bit of knowledge of the outdoors, as well as tons upon tons of community service.

Regarding your post, Adderal, Jack3d, or chocolate-covered espresso beans? Because I just got done blending 6 oz of the latter and mixing with milk, and my hands won't stop shaking. Still working on that sleep deprivation shit.

I currently drive a 2005 Jeep Liberty. All I can say is, don't do what I did. Beforehand, I actually had a Scion xB, one of those boxy ones. Loved it. Wrecked it. Flipped it eight times down a ravine going over a mountain in Franklin, North Carolina. Little plastic box kept me perfectly safe. Who'd've thought...

<--Boy Scout. Eagle Scout. Gay Webmaster.

Ditto. I also made Vigil in the Order of the Arrow. Fun time. Its strange how once your out of scouting you hardly every get to go outdoors for shit. No more hikes, no more epic canoe trips, haven't slept in a tent in at least 10yrs now.

I just passed 212k on my 4Runner. Very trustworthy and dependable. I've had it since 2000 and now that it's paid off, I just want it to last and last for as long as possible.

Been doing an ass load of research lately on Expedition Portal: Vehicle-Dependent Overland Expedition Community and other forums, and here's my revised list in order of what I'm looking to upgrade to from my '95 Civic:
  • Land Rover Discovery Series 1 or 2
  • Toyota Land Crusier 80 Series
  • Range Rover Classic
  • Toyota 4Runner 4WD
  • Jeep Wrangler TJ
  • Nissan Xterra 4WD
  • Toyota Tacoma 4WD
I'm almost 100% set on the Disco. Yea they aren't that reliable but as I was doing research on a good 4x4 alternative to the Jeep and forgot about Land Rovers and ExPo Portal rekindled my love for them. Check out these pics:

Pure badass. Anyways, any suggestions with my new list? Thanks for the help guys, and post up pics of your trips/rigs if you're into this kind of stuff.
