Hey guys,

My roommate recently started recording, and I'd think it be really cool if I could use my IM skills to help promote his band and get their name out there. Does anyone have any experience in the music industry that could possibly lend some advice for on and offline marketing techniques?

Here is one of their songs

Thanks!

didnt listen to the music, but i think the best bet is to look into a soundcloud bot of some kind.

Soundcloud seems to be the twitter for bands and artists , a strong following on there would sure bring some exposure and ppl listening

Hey that's a pretty good song. Ditch the cliche lyric of walking through the valley of the shadow of death and he's got a hit.

Also.. promoting is easy. Fuck your IM skills and use your HEY GUYS I CAN POST ON REDDIT skills. If people upvote it then it's a good song, if not well then your friend is probably going to end up working at best buy.

There's a simple formula you have to follow. My old band from a long long time recorded our EP at the same studio that Red Jumpsuit Apparatus was recording their EP at the same time. Just happened that the studio owner like them a lot and he had a CD duplication company in connection with his studio. So he basically too them under his wing to try and get them signed. They would pass out 3000 CDs before every show and they got signed (and famous) quick.

So this takes some money but it will pay off. You literally need to get them to invest some money. And about a week or two before every show, they need to hit all the shows that have similar bands playing. They need to pass out their CDs for free with their band name, website and even put on it when the next show is. They will get a lot of people coming out to see them in no time if they have more than just one good song. A and R reps will take notice. Plus it's a smart idea to invest and get some merch made before you do this. Because if a rep comes to the band and they are selling merch also, they will be instantly interested.

Just my advice from being around the block more than once.

everlonglp3 had some great suggestions. The main problem for most bands is, that they are poor as fuck and unwilling to push their shit in a relentless way. Its a typical problem of "artsy" folks. If they are serious about getting signed the best way is to built an audience. And working their asses of by finding unconventional ways, i.e. for example identifying related artists (i.e. not too similar) that are touring the state and offering them to open for free, etc. The music is great, but thats just like having a great website. You got to built a userbase - and get those youtube views up to at least 1000 and add a few comments, otherwise it is look too pathetic...

The standard approach is to build a following. Traditionally, it was through physical shows and such. Nowadays, alot of bands gain a following online.
For my band, I've taken a creative approach to promote online. For example, try advertising the band's music to relevant eyes.

I'm thinking about this, and I would focus in youtube (first), make a channel, and funnel to the band website, with all promo materials and data, and opt-in to make a list, and so on

I helped a guy who makes music promote his youtube video by buying tons of 7search traffic and raising his views. If their shit is good it'll snowball.

What do y'all think about isolating a search term and SEOing the band to the top of it?

Show up #1 for "new rock music" or something like that.
