Anyone thinking about investing in FaceBook?

Facebook is at its peak now and will be almost obsolete in 5 years or less. It will go the way of others before it like Bebo, Friends Reunited and MySpace.

I'm considering it. Facebook is becoming the WHOLE internet for a lot of the 35+ crowd. Facebook will lose some of the younger crowd in the future, but they don't care. Myspace was never able to capture this older generation.

But let's face it, the 35+ crowd is where the money is at. They are the one's that aren't Ad blind yet.

They are clearly afraid of Google+. The whole timeline profile thing was a response to Google+. They are trying to show people that they have already shared years of their life on Facebook, so they shouldn't leave and start over on a new network. But the timeline profile is so ugly and such a mess imo and the header image thing makes it feel like myspace custom profiles imo.

I personally think the Timeline was set up as a way for people to voluntarily give even more information about their life. And that'll make the CIA and FBI's jobs a whole lot easier.

Yeah I upgraded to it. It lags like shit and any photo posted on a wall in cropped so you can't see the sides. It obviously wasn't built for aesthetics, it has to be more profitable to them in some other way. The only thing I can think of is the ads on the sides stay with you as you scroll down the page.

Well said. This is my thinking as well. It doesn't have to do with ad placement or ad CTR. Facebook is reminding you that you have committed countless hours to keeping your profile up to date and it's essentially a journal of your life so far. Why keep a written journal these days when you have timeline? They want people to continue using Facebook as they get married, have kids, have grand kids, etc. and have the option of looking back at their lives. It's a great business move. Those of us who are in the know don't like it, but the average farmville user loves that shit. Time on site probably shot up 10-20 percent.

I don't know about the longevity of Facebook though. People are getting pissed about the privacy issues. Personally, I can't stand using it anymore. When I first got it, it was cool and I added all my friends. It was an extension of my social life. I could be myself, swear, tell penis jokes. Now my mom is on there, my wife's family is on there, my cousins who are like 10 years old, etc. I can't be myself. I have to censor myself. Fuck that. I want to be myself. I want to be true. The younger generation is realizing this, and I believe is anxious to jump to another site. I think another poster nailed it by saying Facebook has successfully captured the older demographic. They can keep it.

It's not just ad blind, it's also ad receptive.

Older people actually have use for and the money to spend on the things being advertised. (Generally speaking)

I think they're gonna be around for awhile. They did everything right that myspace didn't and they are a household name now. If they continue the pace that they are going at with the branding and throwing facebook into everything that moves then they will also be a dominate figure. But the real question is when are they going to launch that search engine they talked about. That is what will decide facebooks future. If they take advantage of the numbers they have right now and launch something that will eat away at google then they will dominate. Either way they have to branch out into something else soon if they want to continue to grow.

Yes this is really true, for people who don't really do anything on the computer for work, but like playing games and mundane things like that, for the older crowd anyways, facebook is their only website.

I am not so sure this is a good idea, at least for now. Facebook is feeling the competition right now, so they're making the IPO. If the price will be as reported then it's very likely that Facebook is overrated and you need to plan on fast sell or wait for the price drop and then buy at some real price.

To date big advertising hasn't bought into facebook because they see it for what it is, where people go to fuck around.

A question: does anybody here either go to Facebook or end up on Facebook when you're looking to research a model of car to buy?

Until this changes, adverstisers will be wary.

When are people most receptive to advertising? When they're enjoying themselves...
