Anyone using Windows 7?

So I had some free time tonight and decided to give Windows 7 (build 7000) a try. (Get it here: Windows 7 Beta 1 Build 7000 0 081212-1400 client en-us Ultimate-GB1CULFRE EN DVD iso : Software > Windows - Other - Mininova - took me a little over an hour)...

I will say the install was the easiest of any OS I have ever installed. It asked me like 5 questions and did everything else itself. It was fast too... took about 15 minutes from start to finish (but I didn't install from a dvd, I extracted the iso to a new partition and clicked setup.exe... much faster).

It configured my 22 inch monitor correctly and set up my network without any problems, all during the install. In fact, I only needed to manually install drivers for 2 devices (motherboard stuff).

The new taskbar is really nice. I've been using objectdock (for XP) for years and didn't think I could live without it, but the windows 7 taskbar does exactly what I needed objectdock to do... soo... points for that.

And as for the most important thing to me, speed, it's fast... really fast. I tried Vista in the past and it only lasted about a day, I never tried it again. But Windows 7 seems to be on par with my XP install, which is impressive... but it could be due to the fact that it recognizes all 4 gigs of my RAM.

My only real complaint is that my dual-core doesn't seem to run as smoothly under Windows 7. Simple things like running Firefox cause a higher load than anything I ever saw under XP (about 2-3% more), but hey, it's beta so I'm not complaining.

In short? I could see myself finally switching from XP once the final version is released.
 


For anyone that's interested... I fixed the cpu load issue by updating my BIOS.

Windows 7 now smokes XP in terms of speed and power management. My CPU is running about 10 degrees cooler and boot-up time is now 16 seconds.
 
They're making the beta available to the public in January - I'll just wait till then :P
 
Sounds good. I will wait and see how the reviews are and then hopefully upgrade from XP pro to 7 if the reviews are as good as what you are saying.
 
AFAIK.. M$ stated they are trying to get Windows 7 optimized for use on "all PCs" the requirements should be way less than for Vista.

Now where did I put that Pentium 133MHz machine?

I feel sorry for all the people that got rid of their old computer, because they needed a new one to run Vista.

Wouldn't surprise me, since Windows 7 is basically Vista with a facelift and some tweaks under the hood. And oddly it comes on par with Apple planning to release Snow Leopard early next year which is supposed to be a sped up version of leopard (remove PPC and carbon support making it intel only and reducing its size and speeding it up quite a bit).

Seems like 2009 going to be the tweaked release on both fronts realizing we've swayed yet again into too much bloat.

I played with Windows 7 a few months back (build 6801), actually ran decent in vmware fusion on my macbook compared to trying to run Vista in the same. Course it seemed to require more harddrive space upon install. (where as when OSX 10.6 comes out, it intends to take less, I assume they're trying to aim at a pseudo-mobile device on their side of the market)

If they're still running 98, they'd need it for most addons now days. And most of the software that demands Vista as an upgrade are typically DirectX 10 capable games. So its more of an entertainment want than an actual need to be 'forced' to vista when in most cases XP SP3 will suffice for most needs.

And if they don't want to buy a new computer, there's always xUbuntu despite lack of ability to use most windows software (by the average joe that is).

I should probably do a test install on my old Athlon 1800 (1.5 Ghz) with 512 MB RAM - I haven't used that computer in quite some time, and right now I have Vista RC1 on it, which performed horribly when I originally downloaded it.

No problems at all. In fact my cpu is reading 70°F right now... and it's 72°F in my apartment. It runs at about 80°F with XP.

Most solid reports indicate that this is the same build that was going to be made a public release in a few weeks (it's definitely the official beta either way).

My laptop came with vista, and apart from the daily fuck up its 'ok'. I like all the visual shit, and it does ok. Firefox uses excessive ram, over a Gb sometimes. It's not the best performance wise, but it will suffice for sure.
