I sold my 17" MBP for a 13.3" MBA, after your eyes adjust it's almost impossible to tell the difference. I've owned 17" laptops my entire life too. With the full screen apps now it's excellent, screen seems WAY bigger than 13.3"...
If you are using a laptop as your main vehicle for your business, you are doing it wrong.
took me 1 week to be completely comfortable with it. I figured out everything I needed to know with google, but you can buy courses from Apple if you are really concerned about it.

my main business machine is a 3 monitor desktop. This MBP would blow it away performance wise, and could natively power all 3 monitors with the 2 thunderbolts and an hdmi port.
you need at least 3 monitors to consider yourself a biz person

also i never once said that a MBP couldn't handle 3 monitors, though using 3 monitors with your MBP would make you a major douche and would defeat the purpose of an IPS display

Actually Thunderbolt can daisy chain so you could power 2, 27" Apple monitors with a single thunderbolt port. So theoretically you could have 5 monitors with a dual thunderbolt/HDMI combo. This is all assuming the graphics card in the system can run 5 displays at those resolutions.
How does using external monitors "defeat the purpose" of an IPS display? Many external monitors are also IPS displays.
what is the point of buying a laptop with an IPS display if you are just going to plug it into 3 monitors with IPS display?

Well let's see, why in the world anyone needs an laptop with 3 monitors.... A couple of scenarios come to mind. I own a business, when I go to my office, I hook up my Macbook to my office monitors so I can work. When I go home, I hookup my Laptop to my home monitors so I can work. When I want to change environment, I can take my laptop to Starbucks, library, the beach, and still work, with a very decent screen resolutions. There is a huge benefit to working with a laptops as your main versus a desktop. First, you are very mobile, you can take it to client meetings, your meeting room, hook it up to your projector, all sort of stuff, without losing your data. You don't have to worry about transferring files to desktop to desktop or to laptop, so you can go mobile.
5 years ago I was in the exact same boat you where in thinking. Why would I ever want a laptop when desktops are more powerful. I took one trip over to the Apple website and saw the technology, and sheer power they have in the light weight devices, which completely annihilated the need for a desktop every again.
In face all of my employees are using laptops, with dual monitors, and are more efficient since they can take their work with them. Can't really do that with a desktop, without some fancy Dropbox, or whatever scenario.
I think the only really reason to have a Desktop computer is for places like a library or your parent's house, so one one steals them cause their are too bulky. The technology has caught up, and what Apple's doing has far surpassed what any other computer company has done.
