Apple now worth more than Microsoft

Doesn't matter, once Steve Jobs is gone... he will turn some other start-up into a billion dollars. (Like when he left Apple and started Pixar Studios... 7.6 billion to be exact.)

Maybe I am just old, but I think there was a lot more competition early on than you think.

We just don't remember the names of any of those companies anymore. Wordperfect, anyone?

Maybe not a genius in the flashy technology marketing way of Apple, Salesforce.com and others, but Bill knew how to build a platform and get people to sell it to the point where he had a monopoly (though that took awhile).

I'm not sure how old you are, but I'm 24 and I remember Wordperfect, among others being around at the time, but it was already too difficult for them to compete due to Microsoft being so much more of a 'household' (using that term loosely) name. Of course there was Netscape for browsers, Wordperfect for word processing, etc etc.. but due to MS' initial market share positioning, they had almost no difficulty moving into any other computer related sector.

I won't argue that Bill knew how to build a platform, but that's not necessarily marketing, and getting people to sell it? Dude, I'm pretty sure that wasn't too hard considering how easy of a sell it would've been, and the profit potential involved.

Microsoft is only so big because they captured so much market share in the beginning. Hardly marketing geniuses.
