Are Directories Profitble?

Pursuant to my previous post, just got a final report on SP activity last month -- directories account for over 6% of all sites sold in November, the majority just basic crap general interest directories built on phpLD (or rarely esyndicat) and all but one of the others are bid-per-link deals built on phpLB.

6% doesn't sound like much but it makes directories the biggest niche represented. All various health sub-niches combined don't add up to as many sales as directories; neither do general celebrity + all specific celebrity/show fansites.

Add to that that some go for crazy prices -- linksdaily.info sold for 47.5 months' revenue (AdSense only.)

Proxies and networks of proxies are also popular at SP, which is just as weird as directories given that they're almost all crap on PHProxy with AdSense trickles for money. Why don't proxy owners ever try to promote paid anonymity services on their sites? I would think it would be a natural fit. (Come to think of it maybe that's another thread on its own.)
