Anyone into displaying art?

I don't collect original$ but I do have a lot of framed prints. Every year I try to add one or two new pieces, been itching for some new stuff lately. Always looking for new paintings, artists, etc.

Any recommendations?

Some of my favorites:

I'm pretty big into modern art.. but mostly more interested in the stories and how the artist developed.

Guess what? Its fucking story time!!!!!

For example, Vincent Van Goghs story I've always enjoyed. Can't remember all the details as I haven't revisited it in a while, but it's interesting to see how his life developed and then was portrayed through his art. If you look at the wikipedia page

Vincent van Gogh - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

You can see the paintings he did through his life. For example, in his earlier years, you can see that his paintings were dark and gloomy. My favorite being "Skull of skeleton with a burning cigarette". The dark colors supposedly reflect his depression and hatred for where he was living. It rained a bunch and what not. Then as you can see when he moved to Paris, his paintings became brighter and more vibrant. Most of his paintings have some story tied to them which is pretty interesting. Another one that is interesting is "Portrait of Dr. Gachet" who was his personal physician. If you check it out, you can see he is holding a plant, called the fox glove. The foxglove in the painting is a plant from which digitalis is extracted for the treatment of certain heart complaints. His doctor prescribed it to him based on his conditions. What has really happened though was that he was suffering conditions due to Absinthe. He fucking loved that shit, and unlike today, it contained a chemical that caused hallucinogens and what not. You can Absinthe in a bunch of his paintings. Anyways, back to the story, That plant that his doctor prescribed, actually caused a digitalis poisoning, which causes a various cerebral disturbances, especially of a visual nature (unusual colour visions with objects appearing yellowish to green, and blue halos around lights). Hence if you go to the section that talks about his paintings later in life, you will see he uses a lot more hues of yellow. It was because of that planet, that his paintings changed so drastically.

And there you have it kids, a moment in time.

On a side note, when he was buried, the plant from which absinthe comes from, was placed on top due to his love for it. When his brother, Theo died, the family wanted them to be placed together in the same burial. So when they went to dig up Vincent Van Gogh, his entire body was wrapped in the roots of the plant and so once again it fucked him.

Oh also, his last painting, the crow in the fields or something like that, supposedly that is a depiction of his suicide as he shot himself in a field, however people argue that he didn't commit suicide.

Oh and for artist I currently like, pretty big into David Choe shit.

can one of you niggas share with me what it is you look for or what fascinates you about those paintings?

i just don't "get it". Shit looks cool, it's cool some dude drew it, etc.. But what's the thing that most people love about it?

It's gotta be something, and im just missing it

OP how bout u?

Not to sound like a hippie or anything, but I thinks its precisely that.

"Art is in the eye of the beholder"

You not getting it, and trying to figure out what the hell its about, is probably why people like it. Get enough people talking about the meaning of the painting and then it sort of gains an aura. More people then try to see what people see, and it just become one massive vicious cycle. Andy Warhol, was famous for never explaining the meaning of his paintings and in doing so caused people to become obsessed with analyzing them when in reality it was probably an idea he had on the shitter.

For example, check dali's painting, the persistance of memory:

The Persistence of Memory - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

You know how that idea came about? He saw a piece of Brie cheese melting. Yea, that fucking infamous painting all started because of fucking cheese.

Also you see that little red object on the bottom right of the painting? You know what is on it? Those little black things are ants. Why did he put ants on the painting? Yup, you got it right! cause he fucking hated ants.

I have 3 by Dali (just prints of course), but The Temptation of St. Anthony is my favorite because of all the religious symbolism in it.

I'm not really into art, just needed something to cover the walls, but this one was pretty fucking cool.

I have this one on the wall behind me now. I don't know who did it. Saw it several years ago and liked it enough to pick it up. There's a few Ansel Adams photos on the walls also, but nothing else really worthy of calling art. Personally, I'm more drawn to sculpture and interesting things done with wood rather than framed art.

Yeah I hear that. Honestly I didn't really appreciate art until I took a couple art classes in college. I remember going to museums as a kid and being bored, not really caring.

Aesthetics is weird. Ultimately people make decisions based on emotions and justify them with reason. That's how I think about my preferences in art and music. If it evokes an emotion then it compels me.

I guess I could try to justify why I like each piece by relating it to my personality, like the cubist pieces reflect that I'm a spacial thinker, the blobby color pieces reflect that I'm good at abstraction, etc. That's definitely some part of it. And then the obvious angle of the content itself, i.e. I like horses, landscapes, they might remind me of good memories, etc.

The best analogy I can think of is instrumental music. Some people will say that's a nice beat or a catchy melody and others will say it's boring or stupid. Ask them why they feel that way and they'll probably have trouble describing why in words. Same with art.

I think it comes down to the old saying 'a picture tells a thousand words'. If the art symbolizes words that resonate with you then you'll like it. Even if you don't know what those words would be. Like reading a thread on a forum or a book or watching a movie or listening to a song. It's all storytelling. No different than a painter telling a story by creating an image. You the viewer create the story beyond what is presented to you. </wonky>

If it's not apparent from the above I'm definitely not an art critic :p

My family has a bunch of original whistler etchings.. Nothing amazing, about the size of piece of paper but still valued pretty damn high. You wouldn't know it if you saw them though.

Also fun fact: In the past they used to say, "Would you like to come and see my etchings?" Which mean't would like to come and fuck me.

True story.

I'm big into Chinese / Japanese Art and Calligraphy Scrolls... Actually planning to take some Calligraphy classes at some point...

Really like the colors. Reminds me a lot of C215.

Do you have a flickr with pics of the rest of the collection?

I don't, sorry.

If your interested Signal Gallery sell some good art - Signal Gallery

I'm currently re-building my collection after recently selling some old Banksy's and Faile's I was tired of. Made quite a profit on those. I like to buy upcoming work and hope to turn a profit once I fancy a change.

So your family would invite people over to fuck them under the guise of viewing art? You must have had an interesting childhood.
