So we're big Splenda consumers around here. You don't even want to know how much I consume in my coffee and oatmeal everyday. I would like to break away from the sweetners made in a lab for obvious reasons but I've yet to find a good substitute.

I know the one most recommended is Stevia. I tried Sweetleaf and found it to be extremely bitter. I'm at a loss at how people interpret bitter to be sweet. ( also caused alot of intestinal issues ) I've read some about it and some articles say that different brands of Stevia taste less bitter but not sure if I buy it. Also wtf was up with the intestinal thing? I read something about the alcohols used and maybe that was it but I didn't think Sweetleaf used any.

I know there's alot of health nuts around here, any recommendations?

how about alternative natural sweeteners?
Let me google that for you

Yeah. Thanks I've heard of that there google thingy. Was hoping for actual opinions of people that have used Stevia and what they thought of it with regards to the bitterness. Which is why I came to the forum.

EDIT: hmm I wonder what brown sugar would taste like in coffee...anyone ever tried it?

from the selection of artificial sweeteners out there, splenda/sucralose appears to be the best.

however, if the choice comes down to aspartame vs. regular sugar - i'll take the slightly extra calories/carbs over the Monsanto chemical.

realistically, unless someone is diabetic, morbidly obese and insulin resistant, or on a very strict diet, raw sugar or honey are both the healthiest, safest, and best tasting choices.

moderation in everything of course.

stevia is natural, so from a safety standpoint it's good. but like you, i never enjoyed the taste of it, so that was a deal breaker for me.

brown sugar goes well in coffee. oatmeal too.

I was in trader joes one day and saw the stevia sweetener so i bought it. It was so bad that I gave it to my mother in law.

Tried brown sugar - not too bad.

Why not try the flavored creamers; Hazelnut, French Vanilla, Southern Pecan, Irish Cream etc.

or black with a couple shots of JD - that'll put a little hair on your chest :P

I use ONLY brown shugar in coffee when I'm home ( espresso here ) and I love it

I switched to brown shugar kind of 3 years ago

only natural sugars, no sweeteners

Big Splenda user, not a crystal of sugar in the house. Brown sugar and honey are good. But I am ok with the artificial stuff for now.

The stevia I have is this one: New Roots Herbal

It's extremely concentrated; if I use too much of it, coffee, etc. definitely becomes sweet to the point of bitter. Stevia is an insanely high powered sweetener.

I don't know where you can find it online - I bought it at a health food store here. I swear by it - once you get the correct amount down pat, it replaces sugar perfectly.

Don't forget, a lot of these "replacement" sugars defeat the purpose by increasing your appetite. Something about the liver expecting sugar and not getting it which then triggers your hunger response. That's why you see so many fat people sipping on diet coke.
