Artificial Sweetners

Just limit your daily intake of sweet stuff. Sugar replacements (sugar alcohols) are known to cause dumping and facilitate fat gain.

I just use good old fashioned American refined sugar. But I suppose if I wanted to convince myself I was being more healthy, I'd use Sugar In The Raw

I use that sometimes if the sugar thingy at the coffee shop is empty and I don't feel like interrupting the social hour taking place behind the counter.

Just drink your coffee black, only way to go.

For oatmeal, just add real fruit.

What? No one has made a comment yet about Sucanat (Sugarcane natural)?

Suc a nat.

Wickedfire is slipping, I tell you.

Real Sugar, and less of it.

^ What he said. I can't tolerate artificial sweeteners and other than my 2 Coca-Cola-per-day fix, I try to limit my sugar consumption to what I dump in my morning coffee. "Try" is the operative term there. And my girlfriend is never too far away to remind me that they contain high-fructose corn syrup (she's the diet nut...until I start getting fat I'm going to hide behind the "it's ok in moderation" that the corn industry commercials so "helpfully" remind the public).

Everything from Splenda to Sweet N' Low taste exactly what I would imagine Ajax would taste like (the harsh cleaner stuff not the cool web development kind).

I do try to remember to use that "Sugar in the Raw" stuff when memory permits but I'm not going out of my way for it.

try semen, you and your husband will both love it.

I want to say I think a girl asked this in a sex-ed class when I was in junior high, but it may be one of those huge nationwide jokes or something:

So this girl wanted to know why semen tasted so sweet. After she realized what she said, it was to late and the damage was done. Everybody ROFL'd at her, yet the nurse/teacher whatever answered her question. Well sweet heart, there are sugars in semen.

If you can find it, try the Coca-Cola bottled in Mexico. They still use real sugar.*

*I make no warranties or representations about the safety of Mexican Coca-Cola.

funny, this thread is more important to me than any other on WF right now. and i'm not kidding...

So we're big Splenda consumers around here. You don't even want to know how much I consume in my coffee and oatmeal everyday. I would like to break away from the sweetners made in a lab for obvious reasons but I've yet to find a good substitute.

I know the one most recommended is Stevia. I tried Sweetleaf and found it to be extremely bitter. I'm at a loss at how people interpret bitter to be sweet. ( also caused alot of intestinal issues ) I've read some about it and some articles say that different brands of Stevia taste less bitter but not sure if I buy it. Also wtf was up with the intestinal thing? I read something about the alcohols used and maybe that was it but I didn't think Sweetleaf used any.

I know there's alot of health nuts around here, any recommendations?

honestly turbo, regular sugar isn't all that bad for you.

It is by the time I add the ridiculous amount I would have to in order to equal the sweetness I'm used too from the sweetners. I've had to use sugar before and it's almost a 1/3 of the coffee cup.

Serioulsy? You need help woman. Liquid sugar isn't really enjoying the flavor of things.

Learn to drink your coffee with a little sugar in the raw and milk, if you like milk. Or even straight. Good coffee has a great flavor without tons of crap in it.

Use a tablespoon of golden brown sugar on your oatmeal, which is far far superior to white sugar on oatmeal, with a little dash of milk. I mean fuck what are you doing? Artificial sweeteners in oatmeal? Blech!

All natural FTW!

Speaking of which, starbucks has the nastiest black coffee I have ever tasted in my life. I had to do 5 shots of Rumple Minze to get rid of the taste.

Sucralose, Stevia, aspertame, et al. are just plain bad for you.

They've been linked with enlarged liver and kidneys and Splenda contains cholorine (a known carcinogen), Aspertame has been outlawed in Japan as being a carcinogen, and the crazy thing about it all is that they have been shown to stimulate a sweet tooth. In laboratory testing, people who drank Diet Coke were 3x more likely to be unsatiated vs. those who just drank the sugary normal Coke.

For my mileage, I can't have anything with sucralose et al. because it gives me a wicked migraine. But what Unarmed Gunman said was right, just use 'plain ole sugar' in smaller amounts or for baking/ tea/ with fruit- use honey.
