Bear Spray

Have any of you actually been close to a bear in the wild?

I ride my mountain bike out my driveway, up the road, cut thru the backside of a neighbors property and hit the National Forest trails. If I were to come in from the public access side on the other end of the ridge, there's a sign that looks like this (minus the glacier park part cuz google images ain't got no bumfuck Idaho signs):

Only seen a couple grizz, lots of black. I pack pepper spray (and sometimes a .45 if I'm going in way deep) but mostly I make a lot of noise and ride fast.

Fuck. That.

In the first pic, you will see a red object in the water in front of me. That is a sockeye salmon. That is pretty much all they were interested in as the salmon were spawning.

The only time it got dangerous is when you actually caught one of those instead of the big rainbows we were catching. Because then you were basically reeling their dinner right to you.

As soon as you realized it was a salmon, you broke your line as fast as possible!

I remember on a road trip to Canada in my youth they wouldn't let us take our American grade bear spray across the border. We had to surrender it and buy pussy nerfed Canadian bear spray. I am lucky to have escaped America's Hat with my life.

Bears have innate fear of humans. When encountering the bear, you should never give them any indication that it is ok for them to approach you. I have seen some people trying to be brave and giving them treats and hanging out with them like those idiots Treadwell and Huguenard.

That is the worst thing you can do to a bear!

Not because crazy, psychologically impaired bears exist just like crazy humans exist (although why would you put your life in hands of a creature that has 5 machetes stuck into a basketball for paws is beyond my comprehension). It is because you are condemning them to death! Once the hunters see that bear has no fear of humans anymore, he will need to be shot. If you ask any national park rangers, they will confirm that to you.

So while you think it is a good idea to leave your leftovers for the bears on a campsite, you are making it much worse for them and to the campers that come there after you.

Seeing pics of these douche bags standing next to their prize kill bear makes me fucking embarrassed to be part of the human race.
