Been Traveling for a Year Now. AMA

As for India it was nastiest and dirties place I have ever seen. As soon as you enter the country expect the smell of shit and piss to ALWAYS be present.

Man I really thought Russell Peters was exaggerating in this video:

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cUWSVTE17cE]Russel Peters - Shit and Go! - YouTube[/ame]

The Jewish people are massive douchebags. The whole experience in their country was unfriendly and unwelcoming.

Well it was nice meeting you bro. lol

I will for sure go back and trek more in Nepal.

Annapurna region and plan like 2 months instead of the recommended 21 days, so much cool shit in dem derr mountains. Cool thread, thanks for sharing. +1 for travel blog.

I think most guys are either link spammers or have moved into agency type work.

I share content. Lots and lots of content. Highest quality only.

Jordan - Aqaba

The most beautiful water/diving i've ever experienced. Did you experience better on your trip? I'm guessing that's what you visited Aqaba for? Unless you used to cross over from Israel to Egypt?

How did you like Hong Kong? Right now it's my #1 on my want to go destination list.

That's awesome.
I'm currently 5 months into my travelling the world experience, although I am working as I go. Like you, I said "fuck it", sold my belongings and set off.
If you go back to Morocco check out Imlil.

As for India it was nastiest and dirties place I have ever seen. As soon as you enter the country expect the smell of shit and piss to ALWAYS be present. The people don't care about anything. They piss in the street litter everywhere and and treat the country like a massive garbage can/toilet. Even when there was a garbage can 5 feet away people still just drop food and trash on the floor. The cows are pretty much street cleaners as they walk around and eat all the garbage but add more shit and piss. So if you want to visit India live larger and only go for a week, see the famous shit and get out.

Holy crap, sounds like you went to the wrong parts of India. Large parts of Mumbai are messy and I was glad that I had a local friend taking care of me. As for the shit / piss smell, I only noticed that when I got out of the plane (the airport is surrounded by slums, so no wonder). Also, which retard thought it would be a good idea to use carpets on the floors in a fucking airport?

You should've checked out Goa. Great beaches, cool people, $20 a night for a double bedroom house with bathroom, $3 for a great meal and $1.5 for a fucking Gin Tonic at the beach. Only turnoff is the shitty Wifi there (at least in north Goa, south Goa is fine).

Sounds like an incredible time, really good on you for doing it.

My experience is narrower. I've been living in countries in South America - 3 months in each place - for a while now. My costs are about $2k per month. That gets me a nice room with my own facilities in an apartment in the nice area of town, but usually sharing with one local person who owns the place. I eat out twice a day at nice restaurants, take taxis.. sight see, and usually become involved with volunteering in schools/hospitals. I work about 15hrs a week on average, but it varies hugely on what else I'm doing. I had such a good time where I went last that I am considering going back to live there for 6 months, then maybe 12... etc. For me, it's mostly the climate, food, people and most importantly the connections I make with them that shape my view of where I've been.

In my case, I prefer to live with a local person than on my own as this gets me meeting all their friends, expanding my social circle etc without any weirdness at the start. Then the volunteering takes that to the next stage and before you know it, you become a part of a place and are sad to leave. I've accumulated more nostalgia and experiences in the last few years than the rest of my life put together.

Been in argentina already?.

Awesome trip man!

Did you carry a notebook with you? If so, was it safe in hostels? I travel a lot (currently in Warsaw), but I always go the expensive route of hotels and apartments. But I was thinking of hostels for socializing reasons.

You're back in the states now or do you plan to stay abroad?

About India, you can't place your foot in certain cities/towns. I have never been to places you have been to and I don't think I will visit them soon enough.

There's a Big gap between Rich and Poor. 97% Indians earns less than $200 per month. 99% Earns less than $500 per month. The income generated by 1% of the population have averaged to a $1500 per capita income for 1.2 billion people living in India. Their income directly affects the lifestyle & attitude.

When you have to visit India, make sure it's a Luxury trip. Visit Goa, Pondicherry, Kochi, Coorg, Bangalore and take a flight back home. Don't stay in a hotel that costs less than $200/night. Always travel either by flight or a Private Cab. Never bother to take the taste of traveling in an Indian Train. You won't regret your journey if you take a few precautions.

Nope. I'm wondering about it maybe for next time. Have you been there?

By the way, to the OP: I don't know much about your situation but a thought that crossed my mind was, if you have a lot of good photos of these places you could sell them as stock images. I have no idea if it works well but it might be worth a go, selling on sites like fotolia.

Don't listen to him. My best childhood memories were chilling on Indian trains at the door watching the countryside racing by. Stand back so you don't fall out, and have a firm grip. The most zen feeling ever, just watching the countryside going past you, with the sounds of the train as your soundtrack, and that hint of a little danger if you step too close to the door.

Just keep your luggage locked and chained and you should be fine.

Btw in terms of India, I agree that the majority of the country is a shithole. However, I highly encourage you to visit the Himalayan states and go visit some small towns in the mountains, maybe do some hiking, etc.

There are a lot of remote places in India that are very beautiful. Indian cities are horrible places to visit.

I totally agree with going luxury if you plan to visit India also about the private car or flights. The train stations were some of dirtiest places in India. The train cars will be stopped at the station and the people will use the toilets on the trains but that just drops it on the tracks. So down in the track pit is a horrible river of piss and shit that flows along the tracks. But then they also serve food there so the food garbage gets thrown onto the tracks adding to it. You will see hundreds of rats running around the tracks and nearby wild dogs that I assume eat the garbage and rats.

I felt so sorry for the guys they hire to walk along the tracks to pick up the large garbage to not mess with the train. They just walk though all that crap and pick up the large plastic bottles. The train stations are really a interesting Indian experience.

New Delhi - was crowed, violent, and the air quality sucked from the tuktuks. Low levels of crap here.
Jaipur - had bad air but also got pretty nasty with food garbage. This is was the first time I saw a "public toilet" that was just guys peeing on a wall that drained into the street behind them.
Udipur - was super clean in the tourist area. The cows crapped but someone actually cleaned it up. It wasn't so bad here.
Khajuraho - was a small town so it was pretty clean and the air was better.
Agara - got pretty nasty. Wasn't to much crap in the streets but the drainage channels on the side of the road were nasty rivers of sewage. The air quality also got bad but because of "dust" in the air.
Varanasi - was really really gross. The worst place of them all. The air was horrible from massive amounts of tuktuks. There are goats, and cows wondering the streets here and they crap everywhere. You basically have to keep your eyes on road to make sure your not stepping horrible. Massive amounts of food garbage in the streets also.
Bodhgaya - was a smaller town again and the people here were super poor. But it was cleaner because it was a smaller town. Lots of dust, but only a few cows.

Not sure if any of you mofos care but I have been meaning to post something for awhile.

Last year when Google decided to make the SEO D'Day I lost 90% of my income, my long term girl friend and my apartment. Everything had gone to shit so I decided to say fuck it and left to go travel the world. The last 5 years all I have been doing is working online and watching the travel channel all day. It was time to get out of the office and country I pretty much had no reason to stay at that point.

So I bought a one way ticket to London, put all my shit in storage and got a 45L backpack. Ive lived out of that backpack and done more shit this year than I could have ever dreamed of. Ive seen countless works of art, several world wonders, and hiked to the base of everest.

Here is the route ive taken thus far.

thats a really big trip. You been to Nepal too, thats great. Where did you stay in Kathmandu?

In Kathmandu I stayed in Alobar1000 it was a pretty nice hostel. Travelers in Nepal loving trekking and smoking weed. One night there this guy who was leaving for India came up stairs with a massive jar of weed and said we needed to smoke it all since he was leaving. That night 31 of us rolled 31 joints of various sizes and styles and then passed them around all night. So everyone always had a joint in hand. The next two nights were exactly the same. This dude bought like 4K of weed while in Nepal.

If you had a friend with the same money / time available - would you recommend to do exactly the same as you? More places, less places.. essential things you've learnt?

Great thread, cheers!
