Been Traveling for a Year Now. AMA

Thai Tourist Visas

For Thailand many people go to the Thai embassy in their country before visiting. They will give you a 2 month tourist visa(s). These are available as single, double or triple entry. Different countries give different numbers of entries, double is common. A double entry tourist visa = 2 x 2 months. Each of these can be extended within Thailand by a month. So really each entry = 3 months. So if the embassy gives you a triple entry visa you can get 9 months in Thailand (as long as they don't limit the use by date). After each visa entry has been used (every 3 months), you need to do a border run- basically step onto another country then back in to activate the next visa entry. Once you have used up the visas you will need to visit a Thai embassy in another country to apply for new ones.

To save all this hassle many people sign up to learn Thai. This means you can get an education visa. For these you just need to visit the immigration office in Thailand every 3 months. This option is more expensive.

3-4 months in each place, so where do you pay your taxes, if any? Do you have PT status?

As an American I don't really have the option to not pay unless I renounce my citizenship. I have Canadian friends that do this without problems.

With the expat tax exemption I get to more or less write off roughly my first $95k in income, but I'm still required to pay everything on top of that.

The setup that I now use to help with this is:
- My business activities are run through an offshore corp.
- I pay myself the $95k/yr from the corp, into my personal bank account.
- All other income resides in the corp account. I don't need the cash, so it might as well just sit there.
- Offshore corps are more liberal with business expenses. That's all I need to say.

This is over-simplified, but it's the basics. I still end up paying some taxes in the end, but it is greatly reduced.

Legal Note* This structure is not designed to avoid taxes, it is put in place for business purposes, and ease of client relations.

I would love to be able to do that! Although to be honest I'm not as much of a hiker than a city person. But I love to travel and as much as I would love to do the same, I think I don't have enough funds to do that kind of travelling.
