best way to relax before a public speech or important meeting?

^^^^As a advocate in a previous life I always found that if I went into Court full of confidence, it would inevitably end up with me making an ass of myself or fucking up in some way. There is nothing worse than having some Magistrate or District Judge ripping you to pieces in front of your peers!

Being a little anxious is a good thing in these situations as it keeps you focused. So remember all the P's (Prior Preperation Prevents Piss Poor Performance) embrace your nerves and go out there and knock your speech out of the park.

Theres no better feeling when you do this right!

Don't relax, amp up. Go out and do something really stupid, embarrassing, and impulsive. Go to a crowded mall, stand on a bench or something, and start talking about how the world is going to end in 2012. Once you go through that, giving a publich speech will be a walk in the park ;)

lol :D

I used to do a lot of pre-sales presentations and I am not nervous anymore but initially what I used to do was : if you have to give a 45 Minutes presentation, make a note/script that will take you 90 minutes to 2 hours when to speak alone.. That way you will have more to speak than you forgot. You forget "points" when facing a crowd, and specially if you belief in Clean uncluttered Slides. So if you forget half, you are still safe. And a Shot of Redbull to Perk you up. Active is better than not relaxed.

Realize that nothing that you say will matter in 100 years.

Realize that nothing that you say will matter in the following 60 minutes.

I've given presentations on a stage in front of hundreds of people, it's always nerve racking for the first 60 seconds but like someone mentioned above you have to tell yourself "these people are here to see me, i'm the genius, I know more than they do" and go with it.

If you asked any of those people in the audience to take your place nobody would volunteer. Just watch how Letterman and Leno interview do their monologues, they really don't care if it works or not..

This is by far the best thing you can do.

I had a huge presentation to give in college, it was in front of a large class and multiple professors. There were 3 people in my group presenting. One of the guys in my group pulled the other two of us aside. His dad was a doctor and he got a hold of some beta blockers (used by people with heart conditions). We took 1 pill about 30 minutes before we presented and I had never felt so relaxed or confident. I could have spoke to the UN and told them what the fuck is up, with no problem.

Get your hands on some beta blockers and you will be blown away. I think they block adrenaline or something....amazing shit!

Sounds Interesting... Is it not harmful though?

It had no side effects for me. The guy that gave them to me said that he took them before interviews for jobs, etc. I'm sure they could be bad if you over used them, but one every now and then is probably ok.

I know they use them to treat anxiety and high blood pressure.

If you can get your hands on one pill and take it before something you are really nervous about, you will be blown away. It's like flipping a switch.

If you're really nervous and cannot deal with public speaking then maybe try taking some of those beta-blockers but I think it would be wise to take one on your own when you can see what kind of effect it has on you without hopping in front of an audience. If it works for you then go for it.
In the end, the best thing you can do is just gain some self confidence. If you are invited to speak somewhere it's because people want to hear what you have to say. You don't have to be Tony Robins. You just have to get across your points in a coherent fashion and hopefully you do it in a way that seems natural.
I used to be terrified of giving presentations because I never prepared properly for them. I used to try and memorize a script I had laid written out but relying on a script makes things way too stressful because if you forget a line then everything can break down.
Take the advice of others in this thread and focus on covering 3-10 key concepts that you are well versed in. If you're using ppt then have one concept and 3 subpoints to support your thoughts on each slide. If you every lose your train of thought just refer back to the slides. Remember, people wanted to hear from you. You're the big swinging dick in the room (maybe not, but know that you are) so drop some knowledge, crush the presentation, seal the deal, and continue to ball.

ok so i got some Inderal today. Is that what you used?

Tried it by myself and yes, it works. You still get nervous but no physical effects. Also heard Klonopin is even better but that could be a bit more hardcore to take.

breathe in for 7 seconds, hold it for 7 seconds, then breathe out for 7 seconds for 3 minutes...

peg 6 key points you want to talk about, if u can, remember 1 sub point for each point.

key point = message u want to get across

sub point = anecdotal story about message

do this obviously as long as u can before giving the talk.

hope it helps,
