Anyone know a way to bet on the spot price of hard disc drives? Certain world events are going to result in a big shortage very soon.

Japan is almost back online after the tsunami. Thailand impact isn't known yet.

Price of a 1TB HDD has fallen 13% since January 2011.

So, are you sure about this?

Thailand Floods Could Be A Washout For Disk-Drive Companies - Forbes

I'm in Thailand watching the disaster unfold. It's getting worse. They just announced evacuation of the last big industrial estate in Bangkok as efforts to prevent it from flooding have failed. So all of WD's factories in Thailand are now out of commission. Thailand provides 60% of the world's HDDs and WD is the largest producer.

Looking for some kind of way to bet directly on the price of HDDs rather than buying the stock of a manufacturer who may or may not be impacted by the flooding.

best way is to stockpile em physically. if you are going to buy forwards you can do it via the spot price of ram. It's a pretty illiquid market though. Used mainly by corporates for hedging via international banks.

Why would you buy stock? You'd be wanting to short the stock because their revenues will decline from lower output because of the flooding.

As in buy the stock of an unaffected manufacturer in anticipation that they will take more market share and be able to command higher prices in the face of a shortage caused by WD's production being knocked out. But that's less interesting than being able to bet directly on the price of HDDs, if there was a way to do that.
