Personally I think domain hacks are a fad. It takes a lot of branding for them to have much use, but most webmasters never get to that point to begin with. I would stay away from them, instead using the extensions where they make a lot of sense.

For example, someone snatched up all the .SC extensions with cities in South Carolina... Charleston.SC, MyrtleBeach.SC, etc... now THAT is powerful and in my opinion has longevity. I have enough domains laying around vacant, buying domain hacks is like taking du.mp on my wall.et
