Bill Gates AMA on Reddit

Of all the things to criticize Windows for, you succeeded in picking about the most irrelevant and nitpicky thing possible.

Disagree. It's annoying as fuck when you wake up in the morning and realize your computer has restarted because of some random update that went on at 3AM. Obviously there is worse... random crashes, BSODs, RAM/CPU usage, but I picked the restart thing as an example because it's something end users have been complaining about since 95 and yet it's getting worse with every iteration.

Go to Control Panel
Click System and Security
Click "Turn automatic updating on or off"
Select "Download updates but let me choose whether to install them"
Click OK

I'm amazed people are bitching about something that takes 2 minutes to change.

This is one of the primary reasons I finally left Windows actually. There are too many better options now to mess with Windows as my main OS.

The biggest plus for Win is that you never have to pay for software, but of Apple you have.
Please name any OS in alternative, that does the same, have all that free apps and don't need much effort to learn?

Btw you're stupid and annoying

Their flagship products haven't really changed in 20 years.

Really?! You don't think there's much difference between Win7/Win8 and Win NT?!! I think you've forgotten just how much things have changed.

Try Ubuntu and you'll see how bad Windows sucks.

Few of the apps I use are even made for Linux. Double booting wouldn't be any more efficient for my workflow.

Try Chrome (which you probably already do) and you'll see how bad IE sucks.

I do use Chrome and FF, but IE 10 is miles ahead of where any previous version was in performance and standards compliance.

Plus Chrome isn't the end all and be all of browsers. Font rendering in Chrome is ABYSMAL compared to IE, FF and Safari. It's shocking just how bad Google fonts look on Google's own browser. Then there's the Flash bug, the inability to set a new tab page without a 3rd party plugin, disappointing audio playback, and many other bugs (just look at the issues on the Chromium dev site).

Can you imagine that in 2013 I still need to restart my computer after I install a software on Windows? Can you believe that?

I can't believe that anyone would perceive this as a problem. This happens a lot less frequently than it used to, it usually only happens with OS updates, and it takes my computer all of about 30 second to restart. Plus, when your computer restarts now in Win 8 it returns you back to your previous state, with all the apps and docs you had open. This is a non issue for me. Also, as Cardine pointed out, you can mitigate the inconvenience by changing the settings.

I also know you sometimes have to restart your machine in iOS or Linux after you've had an OS update.

I very rarely have random crashes, no more frequently than I have had with iOS. I do not BSOD. I currently have 4 Adobe apps open (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign and Bridge), Chrome and Firefox are open with about 30 tabs between them, IE is open for testing pages, Outlook, Skype, KeePass, Sublime Text, and a handful of background processes like Kaspersky, Mystic Thumbs, Suitcase, WAMP, etc. etc. are all open and I'm using 38% of the 16 GB of RAM I have installed and 3% of my CPU. I do not run a paging file and I never run out of memory unless I try to open the entire Adobe Creative Suite at the same time.

Might be time to upgrade your computer if your shit runs that poorly. Either that or quit exaggerating.

Take the aesthetics out of it, not much has changed. The problems Windows had 20 years ago are still here today.

Few of the apps I use are even made for Linux. Double booting wouldn't be any more efficient for my workflow.

Most designers I've met don't like Linux for the same reasons, but all in all you have to admit the Linux is a superior OS.

I do use Chrome and FF, but IE 10 is miles ahead of where any previous version was in performance and standards compliance.

Again, designer problems. Take the design concerns apart, Chrome is unbeatable... Amazingly fast, ridiculously easy to install extensions, optimal memory usage...

It does NOT only happen with OS updates. It happens with virtually every software you install that requires core/registry changes.

This restart thing has been one of the most annoying things about Windows since it first came out. Millions of users have complained about it. If you're the 1% in this case, well so be it. I don't enjoy having to restart when I'm working on 3 Word docs, 2 Excel sheets and 12 Chrome tabs. The 3 minutes it takes to reboot and get back on track, I'm already "off the zone" if you know what I mean. Productivity is fragile.

I also know you sometimes have to restart your machine in iOS or Linux after you've had an OS update.

Yes, OS update maybe, not any random software.

Both my computers are top of the line. I rarely BSOD on my desktop, but occasionally on my laptop. (Note: I game on my laptop. Windows + Gaming = bad combination)

I'm not exaggerating. I hate Windows. Let's agree to disagree on this one.

That automatic overnight restart was removed in Windows 8 because of the problem that you described above. You now see the following message for 3 days warning that a restart is needed...

B6sP1XB.jpg

If you ignore that message for 3 days, Windows will wait until you are actually at the computer, then pop up a message saying that you have 15 minutes to save your work before a restart...

If you are still working 15 minutes later it just pops up another message asking you to save your work and saying it will restart automatically next time you sign in...

Updates requiring a restart go out once per month on "Patch Tuesday", the second Tuesday of the month.

Good old bill is implementing microchips with windows on them in vaccines. Who says he isn't ahead of his time?

I actually read it, as much as I hate Reddit... Seems like he is just trying to be a humble and normal guy. He does go on about the health care stuff and mission projects, but he seems genuine about it. I mean when you're worth so much $$$, do you really even need to care about PR anymore? Good to see he does the right thing. Still want to hear things about his lifestyle, like what car do you drive, what do you spend the most $$ on every week, mostly baller questions.

He is a very smart man in a powerful position that is doing his part in ushering in global population reduction (and not just the Africans). If you're cool with that, then certainly he's your guy.

The way he goes about implementing his ideas is phenominal and although Microsoft "appears" to have faltered significantly since he was forced out of leadership, their role as a company has riden various waves of transition to accomodate his absence very well considering.

However, given such a gap the company has done well and has etched their mark across various economies. Microsoft is no longer mere a computer software company (for home and business use). It is something much larger, but they also happen to provide software.

Even still "Monday morning quarterbacking" Microsoft from behind our keyboards is a little far fetched as some people can't even get successful campaigns off the ground routinely. Every peak, valley, victory, defeat, failure and succes of Microsoft gets somewhat of a celebration from here as a valuable learning tool for when my companies boast that kind of reach, power and status. Every step Microsoft takes is not to my agreement, but every step is an opportunity to learn.

Besides, at that level it's more than products, it's serious politics.

Won't visit Reddit for the talk, but it's sad to know so many people are eager to entertain themselves with the opportunity to communicate with a person who presummably would like a good portion of their ilk or progeny removed from the face of the planet. Yet many of these very same people consider themselves to be intellectually superior or of "high valued stock" demographically.

The internet is a failboat.

Anyone else's Facebook wall filled with this photo today?
