Try turning off jimmy fallon and re-reading the article with as much brain power as you can spare. Nowhere in the article does it state that the women were getting a higher education to become more attractive to men.

This is absolutely correct and the article explains why this is so. But the women did not get higher education in order to better attract men; in fact it's the exact opposite. The article even states that for one "marriage was not on her horizon".
