A woman in Puerto Rico bought the name rights (in Puerto Rico) and about 12 stores, but is sourcing the movies and other inventory from other providers. She runs the only stores selling high margin products like Haagen Daz ice cream and some stores even stock wine. Smart business.

An article here just mentioned the BlockBusters in Puerto Rico are among the few profitable and the among the very few growing.

With that said, I still believe they wont go out just yet. It's not "officially done" they just declared bankruptcy. That doesnt mean they can't fix shit up and do things that work. If only they allow their corporate asses to see how's the industry going and adapt.

It was a good business model at one time but you just can't survive today having that big of store and expecting people to pay 5 or 6 bucks for rentals. To many cheaper options and their business model didn't change with the competition/trends. Sure they tried to compete with Netflix later on but it was to late. Netflix beat them to market and became the leader in regards to the cheap monthly subscription.

In short, they failed to stay ahead of the competition.

Blockbuster is done.

They'll cling to life for awhile, but they lack everything they need to compete in that market in the U.S. They don't have the offline distribution network of Netflix, and they can't duck and weave like Redbox. But even if they could, they'd get swallowed. And fast.

Why? Because the studios are going with Netflix and Hulu. Without those circulation deals (and they're not getting them), Blockbuster is cooked.

They're done.

well now good luck finding a store. + if one by you closes same as netflix plus no roku which sucks as well netflix is the way to go brother.

BUT.... I do prefer Blockbuster over Netflix personally, I've been with Blockbuster for years. You get the same mail service Netflix offers but with free in-store exchages as well which effectively doubles the movies you get compared to Netflix.

...not a whole lot of room there for a shit-tastic video store chain that should have gone under years ago.

Why anyone rents movies anymore is beyond me. I just pirate them. If they're good enough, I'll buy the movie to support the creators. If they're shit (which is like 95% of the time), I'll just delete them and move on. I won't pay for fermented shit, but I'm perfectly willing to support studios that produce movies I enjoy. I do the same thing with programs.

EDIT: Regarding the closing of BB, this is a bad thing for the economy. That's exactly what we need....less American jobs....

serves those movie rental places right. Hollywood video in my area just closed to, still got our blockbuster for now.

Charging up the ass to rent a movie for 1-3 nights. Tacking on ridiculous late fees and being overall inconvient to rent from. It was just a matter of time between downloading/streaming online, redbox and actually useful services like netflix took them out. They had plenty of opportunities to change their business model and adjust but they chose to stay greedy. So fuck 'em. Oddly enough the small video stores in my area seem to be doing even better and will probably do even better once blockbusters and hollywood videos are gone, which good for them.

This. They gave out such poor customer experiences that when Netflix showed up, people were eager for something new.

I know this is splitting hairs, but you actually just leech them from people who pirated them. Unless you bought the DVD and ripped it or went to the movie theatre and video taped it, you didn't pirate shit. Just wanted to throw that out there.

Netflix is the greatest innovation in home entertainment since the Brazilian wax. RIP Competition. The corporate headquarters for Movie Gallery is not far from where I live, which I'm pretty sure is the only reason there's a Movie Gallery within one planet of my house. There's also a little indie shop here which is crazy ... I can only assume it's actually a front for something under the table, because there is no way they are making rent on movie and game rentals by the night.

Not such a big deal, most of their employees are between what 16-25? These people aren't going go on welfare, they're gonna find new jobs or stick with school.

It's not like 50,000 highly specialized auto workers lost their jobs at 45.
