Budget audiophile headphones?

^ General purpose. I use KRK6's monitors at home but I've decided to go to university next year so I'll need a more personal replacement. The KRK's were initially bought when I was heavily involved with music but these days I'm mostly just a listener. I really appreciate good quality sound and could never go back to listening full time through shitty speakers/headphones. I'd prefer listening through a good soundsystem over headphones any day but at uni thats not going to be too feasible, and they'll be useful for now when people are sleeping.

That makes sense with people living around you where u need to be quite. Im just wondering do guys prefer this sound better than regular speakers or is there some great fucking transition by blaring you ears out that makes it mo betta?

I prefer the sound of headphones to speakers in a room. Plus it's significantly cheaper to get a great pair of headphones hooked up to a good amp than it is to furnish a room with a well setup surround sound system.

Plus how else can I lay on my floor and listen to pink floyd full blast without people thinking I'm a weirdo?

Superlux hd681s are pretty good, don't be fooled by the price.

(My dad has some ~£150 grados, and I'd say my £20 Superluxe hd681s are better, although he prefers his grados because they're open back.)

I've always been a fan of my trusty inexpensive Sennheiser HD's.

Not sure if you'd consider them 'audiophile' but they sound damn good, they're bassy and do a great noise cancelling job. Plus the long ass spiral telephone cord is great.

These are the only headphones I use. I wouldn't call myself and audiophile by any means, but I think they're great.

Sony MDR V6, $65 on Amazon. I don't think you can get any better for the price. IMO shits on ANYTHING under $200.

Industry standard for audio professionals since the 80's. Check out the Amazon page. I was skeptical too, but then I got them. Very nice neutral sound, my favorite headphones. And I've owned $500+ headphones and the V6's really can compete with it. I always go back to the trusty V6.

Top engineers also recommend this set. I've had mine for years. Still awesome.

Actually, it's the MDR 7506 model that is the industry standard studio reference phones that run about $100 a pair. The V6 model is kind of the cheaper knockoff and doesn't sound quite as good (though I'm sure it's still nice). I have a pair of MDR 7506 and they're great, had em for years.

Only problem is the faux leatherette SUCKS and because it's paper thin on these it eventually disintegrates. You can get replacement cups from Sony but there is a Beyerdynamic headphone model that is almost an exact clone of the Sonys and they make velour replacement pads that fit almost perfectly on the MDR 7506. I've got two sets of replacements pads and they are so much more comfortable than the originals. They breathe and they are really soft.

Yeah, I actually have 7506, I always thought that V6 was the standard, so I must've got them confused. But they ARE for the most part the exactly same headphone. I also need to get on that Beyerdynamic mod ASAP. The "leather" is starting to suck.

There's lot of debate, the general consensus is that 7506 and V6 are exactly the same. And to the people claiming that the drivers are different, you'd need to have superhuman hearing to tell the difference.

The only noticeable difference is that 7506 has a Gold plated 1/4" adapter as opposed to the V6's Silver plated one. The only reason for the price markup is that 7506 are generally manufactured later than the V6 and they slapped a "PRO" label on it to make it appear more professional because they figured that they were charging way too little for such a good product.

It reminds me of the Sennheiser HD555 to HD595 mod. I got a pair of HD555 as a gift and I wasn't a fan of the bass response. So I Googled it and I found out that you can take out foam strips which are placed inside the headphone to make it sound "muddier" or inferior to the HD595. Once you open the cans up and remove foam strips, you essentially have a 595 which is a lot more expensive. I think it was $100 more than the 555 at the time.

And yes I completed the mod and sure enough the bass response improved along with the overall sound quality. Not by a lot, but it did make a noticeable difference because the foam strips that were inside were pretty big.

Ps. HD555's are discontinued so can cop them for about $80 now down from about $220ish. They aren't bad cans if you can get them at that price and complete the mod. I still prefer the V6/7506 over these though.

I've had a pair of dirt cheap AKG K44s for years and they were surprisingly good. They are my 3rd reserve set now though. :D I tend to almost exclusively use my Sennheiser RS170s, because they're so convenient.

They ain't as good as Bose

LOLZ. Sounds like someone who's bought into their marketing hype. Bose suck, they're very poor and over priced. I sadly have some Bose 'phones and the sound quality is complete rubbish. They're in-ear 'phones that I think were £65 - god knows why I bought them - and they're out performed by some shit ones I got with my fake chinese iPod.

(For the record my best friend is a professional sound engineer, if he tells me something's rubbish, it's rubbish. He doesn't just say Bose are rubbish, it makes him violently angry to even talk about them as a serious audio company. He has some sick Denons and about 5 sets of studio use Beyerdynamics.) :D
