Building from broke

This is an awesome thread! I'm just starting to build out some sites for my own info product(s) myself so your actions are giving me some great tips.

VERY busy day. Just finished working including a 15 minute session on the site at the end (its about 2:30 AM here). Tomorrow won't be any different but from Wednesday on-wards, things will change and I'll be rid of my 14/16 hours of work a day.

Finished in my to-do list:
- Bought more social likes. Now have 15.9k twitter followers and 2.5k facebook fans.
- Started setting up hootsuite. Need to set up some tweets etc though still.
- Updated the meta description for the home page
- Added one photo and caption to each post. Will do more later.
- Also started some interlinking between posts. 3 links to other posts per post.

Added to the to-do list:
- Compress new images.
- Finish interlinking.

This has been useful. I'll add these ones:
sxc.hu
stockvault.net
morguefile.com

They've been able to cover everything so far and keep the costs down.

Good luck man, this is an awesome thread

Thanks guys. It's quite amazing that CCarter's post has inspired several journals which in turn has helped inspire others. A real trickle-down effect going on here.

Check out smush it plugin to compress new images right from uploading. Also you can bulk compress images

Yep it looks interesting thanks. I prefer doing things the old fashioned way though, I get slightly better results.

so any changes in the stats? sales? CTR?

::emp::

Method has changed. I'm aiming to sell the website tavin style. Might provide the ebook as a free incentive to sign up to my mailing list though.

Dont change your work hours, just where your puttin those hours! :338:

If you're driving traffic to aim for web sales later, why not get a little revenue in the mean time? Drop a random affiliate sale here and there, adsense a little, etc. --just my two cents. something is better than nothing!

Oh I'll still be working but for the last few weeks I've had a ton of paperwork to come back to at home which has consistently kept me up until 1/2 AM. That will all be finished tomorrow (thank God!). I'll probably reduce the 14/16 hours of work a day since I'm pretty knackered but I'll be spending at least a few hours a day on the site.

I'll be dropping some links in sometime soon. I imagine it looks better to a buyer if there is a bit of revenue on the site (but with obvious room for expansion).

My paperwork is done now so I've had time to update things on the website. Currently customising category pages. Took me a bit to work it out but if you create a new file in your theme's directory called category-slugname.php where slugname is the slug of one of your categories then you can then edit the HTML/PHP for that category alone (chuck the code in from archives.php as well).

Finished coding the calculator in javascript (learnt it while doing it). I think its pretty damn useful and has space for further improvements.

Tried your calc...it was no response once I hit "calculate"

Really? That's strange. Would you mind clearing your cache and trying again? Might be caching an old version of the javascript or something.

How do you think the website is shaping up? Thanks for all your help!

Still not working right. Just stays blank after you click "Calculate." Pardon me if you've already answered this, but are you using internal or external calculator? Site is WAY better than when we first started talking about it. You didn't have color, remember? Ha! It's really coming along. Looks a lot more professional.

Hmmm that's an odd one. Thanks for trying it out. I'll give it a test at another house tomorrow. It's just a script that takes in a few numbers and throws out some answers in the <span>'s with the right id's.

And yeh, I personally think the site is looking miles better although it doesn't have anywhere near enough content yet!

Right so I'm still trying to work out the javascript error, that is on my to-do list for now.

I've finished interlinking my articles and adding outbound authority links. I've come up with a pretty basic guide to keep in my head when writing/ editing articles: Write articles + Pictures with captions + Internal linking + Authority outbound linking.
Once I have all of those and I've done a quick read over/ spell check then the content is done.

For those that missed it there is a post in CCarter's thread that links to a fantastic guide on site creation and link building. It's actually insane.

I've also decided that I will be releasing my ebook absolutely free, provided they give me their email. I'm kind of doing a double whammy here because I'll be uploading it on my site (domainname.com/ebook-with-keywords.pdf) and throwing in some interlinking with my sites posts. There are then several sites where you can list a link to a free ebook (the list is in the above website building guide, chapter 7 I think). So not only will Google be loving about 20 pages of unique, well written content but I will also be getting REAL HUMANS from the ebook sites! It could also be a nice bit of link bait. If that doesn't help then I will personally punch Matt Cutts in the face.

Changed my mind. The guide has now been uploaded in 2 parts on different pages. The first part has been added to the main menu (since it's kind of like an ultimate guide). That's about 5000 words overall on those two pages. Hopefully it should rank for quite a few long-tails.

Didn't want to do a pdf because people have less time for them. Instead I provide the guide in PDF format to those who sign up to the newsletter. It's always good to offer free stuff to people too.

In other news I might have a content writer that will be able to work to my (un-rushed) schedule. I know them a bit and they are looking for some extra cash. Perfectly happy to work on $1.5 per 100 words and they know a reasonable amount about the niche (he's smart too so he can learn quickly). As far as he is concerned, it beats burger flipping. As far as I'm concerned, he can bang out a couple of 600 word articles a week.

Might be coming in to some money soon ($500 if all goes well). Will require a good amount of work off me but I prefer doing what that job entails than writing content (content writing kills). That work will probably leave me with very little spare time over the next week or two but at the rates I'm (possibly) paying the new content writer (provided he's alright), it should buy a good 33k words or about fifty six 600 word articles. That should definitely do something positive.
