Buing a new pc- thoughts on this please

inb4 get a mac
inb4 build your own pc

but srs, if you could put those parts together yourself you'd save money / get a better system for the amount of btc, sry, i mean money that it would cost you. also getting a fast computer without an ssd is like buying an expensive escort that doesn't have a dick - WHY would you, you know?

also it says "Maximum Power Supply Wattage:300 W" which seems weird.

^^ what he said. At best I can tell, it's a mini ATX build, so it's small which is nice, but from those specs you're essentially buying laptop capability in a desktop. You could do so much better with the same money if you bought mini or regular ATX components and built it yourself. It's got slow RAM, video card is really shit, power supply is weak, but the lack of a SSD is the biggest issue.

It's a great deal, but do budget a new powersupply (300w what?) and an SSD drive for booting programs. Other than that, it is a good machine and should fit the needs of 99% of WF members.

Edit, as fatbat said, you could use a new video card/better RAM, but those aren't as urgent as the first two I mentioned... you REALLY need a decent powersuply if you want to see the power of that computer.

I hate to just agree but that does look incredibly shit for its price.

/build-your-own

(I use an iMac still)

Not sure....never built a pc before...will be doing a lot of googling

If you never built a pc feel free to post any questions. Many of us have. Do you have an old computer case you can scavenge for the build? Are you planing on running any intensive programs like video editing software? Or is this just going to be for surfing? What do you envision yourself doing on this machine?

Case
Motherboard
CPU with heatsink and fan
Power supply
Ram
Ssd
Possibly a standard hard drive for storage
Video card? Or on board (motherboard included) video. This depends on your needs and budget

Case fans if you didn't scavenge a case.

Operating system(windows/Linux) ect.

Think that's about it. It's really pretty easy. Just let us know how you're going to use it and I'm sure we can get you some specific parts recommendations.

If you are building one for the first time, make extra sure the components you get are compatible with one another. Pay attention to detail when looking at model and revision numbers. A slight variation may mean they are completely different. Check around and see if others have used them together.

LOL, now that I think about it, buying the wrong shit is what got me into building systems. One time I got an AGP video card so I could do TV out, but when I opened up the case, I could not find an AGP slot...

^^ Happy to help. It's a piece of piss really and, IMO, a lot of fun.

Some answers to the questions that have already been asked about what your needs are will help in deciding the best build out for the buck, and one that hasn't been asked... are you a gamer?

Happy shopping.

I built my own for the first time last year off a 10 year old computer I had been using for some time that originally had XP on it.

I had a couple of standby computers around in case I fucked this up, but it was a mini ATX ( I had to learn what that was ) and I researched all the original parts based on the model and brand numbers I could find on the case to learn what I even had. Once I knew what I had, I started to research each major part and what I could "swap" out and replace. Once I did this, things started coming together in my head how I could do this.

Once I learned I could replaced the whole MOBO I realized I could redo everything.

I replaced the Mother Board with another Mini ATX sized one. I didn't care about getting the newest or best, I knew anything I got mid-grade would be 10000x better then what came in this 10 years ago new. The only requirement I had was it had to be Mini ATX, fit a AMD chip and have some of those older slots ( for my wifi card and graphics card )

Ordered a new AMD chip that I could overclock, it was some kind of "black" edition amd and also ordered a fan for it and thermal paste

Reused an older graphics card that was still newer then the 10 year unit I bought ( i replaced the graphics card once already ). It was some 8800 GT that gave me 2 monitor ports, so I reused it and overclocked it this time.

Reused my memory sticks ( newer then the 10 year old unit )

Hooked up a couple reg hard drives ( non SSD )

Installed Windows 7

Used all the old fans

I basically upgraded some parts and reused others and I got a huge performance boost. I never did hook up all my USB slots and didnt hook up my cd drive and shit. I also never put the cover back on and it sits on my desk like a jumbled mess of cables for about a year now. I blow out the open case about twice a year.

I just never got around to finishing it once I got it to work and started using it.

I would like to finish it up by:

Installing new memory sticks
Installing an SSD
Installing a new graphics card
Getting a bigger case to fit all the cables from the new PSU.
Getting one of those clicky mech. keyboards

I got couple "slim" profile computers laying around I would like to repurpose too, but I am not sure where to find these slim parts or what they are called ( the PSU is like 1/4th the size of a normal one, same for some of the cards inside ).

I got a couple more mini ATX's too.

Whats a good higher end, decent ( but not top of the line ) MOBO and chip combo these days? graphics card? its hard to stay up to date on this.

A caution on building your own.

It can be a learning experience... which is good, but also, if something goes wrong with your new machine you are the one that gets to try to fix it. It'd be best to make sure you had local back up if you did run into trouble and at least for the first couple months you might make sure you have a back up if something goes wrong.

With all due respect, there's a fair number of people around here that know how to put competitive computer together.

That's kind of what I was implying...

But there's so many readily available "build a pc" communities, why here?
