It's that time of the year again, when your getting begged to help buy people who are already rich presents. I work in a small office of about 15 people (11 females, 4 males) and they are pitching in to buy the CEO and his wife a Christmas present. This is an annual event for them for about 10 years now. I get an email from my coworker that I am to pitch in $25 to help pay for the gift. It's not the $25 that bugs me, it's pitching in to buy someone who is already rich something that they probably don't even want. Is it the thought that really counts? I helped make the CEO money all year around and I don't think I should be buying a Christmas gift for him and his wife as gratitude for keeping me employed. I heard we get nice Christmas bonuses from him, not sure of the amount though. Should I stand up and say no, or just pay the $25 and go with the flow?

Hey, when you're a wage slave, you'll have to do what is expected of you. Perhaps you can get some motivation to work for yourself out of this?

Unless you're being kept in a cage and beaten all day, what's the problem?

Stop being cheap and pay the $25.

If you think your bonus will be more than $25 then you loose nothing.

This is a great question to ask to people who are their own boss...

fuck him.. its not like they are gonna put everybodys name on the gift or th card.

Or do the next best thing. Take all the money and go buy the gift.. get some cheap shit and pocket the change.

Buying the boss a gift is kinda lame cause like you said, he's way better off than you guys. But if that's the way they do things there, then I'd suggest sucking it up and paying the $25.

You don't want to be the one guy who didn't throw in. Definitely not worth it if you value your relationship with your co workers and maybe even the boss if he hears about it.

Play along. You've got nothing to gain and everything to lose by looking like an asshole.

Besides, if you gotta spend $25 to get a nice Christmas bonus, HELLO ECONOMIC CALCULATION!!!

You guys are right. I don't even know why I debated it. Thanks for all the input. Def going to participate now. I didn't really think about the ramifications of not participating

I don't know what corporate world you're living in but buying the CEO or boss or management a Christmas present (or any presents for that matter other than maybe a baby gift, a birthday cake or get well flowers) is NOT the norm in any company that I or my girlfriend have ever worked for, big or small, nor is it something I've ever heard of before from any of my friends.

It's their job to make sure you've all got a Christmas bonus/gift and a staff party to attend and you sure as hell know that if you've got a bonus, they've got one 100 times bigger.

Props to Zimok though!

Workplace culture. When in Rome.

He has nothing to gain by pouting and saying "Well me and my girlfriend never did this before, so no way am I going to put out $25 to not look like an asshole with my coworkers, and have it eventually get back around to the boss that I was the ONE stubborn motherfucker who didn't contribute to his gift."

Is this normal? No, I've never bought my boss more than dinner, and in hindsight, he should have paid because he could write it off. But if it was the established tradition in my workplace, and I am expecting a nice bonus, and if jobs aren't easy to come by, then yeah. I would do what I have to do.

I can't even believe people find time to post about $25 on this forum.
