[Case Study] Authority Site MFA - The Oxymoron site

Update:

Ok I haven't updated this journal since the penguin update.

I've been doing damage control since then.

Basically I wish I had started this since about 6 months ago. Well... maybe not because I would have been way to heavy on anchor text.

Either way this site is doing fine because I haven't done any SEO to it yet.

And because of that I'm not ranking for any of my main terms. Or at least not in the top 500. I think it is safe to say that content alone will not get you rankings.

Still holding off on the SEO though (keep reading for why).

VA had an illness and a national holiday so that has slowed the content down to about the same 1 post a day rate as before, but the quality is pretty much copy paste now. Which is good.

SOCIAL MEDIA + Authority Links

Started a twitter account.

Set it up for whenever I post to the site it sends a tweet. This is really nice but it it means we'd only average about 1-3 tweets a day.

As someone (guerilla probably) pointed out. Authority twitter accounts often are followed by a lot more people than they follow back. Because we're just starting out we'll play it by ear but I hope to keep the number of followed people to just real people. No bots.

Followed all the major insurance companies verified twitter accounts to get the ball rolling.

As expected I got a couple follows from individual agents. (awesome! see below)

I followed them back and I went through their tweets real quick and retweeted anything i thought was worth value + promotional for them.

I'll do this a couple times and for each real agent/person with a real site and then after awhile I'll ask them for a link to my site.

They feel good that a third party site is promoting them and I get a link from authority/aged websites.

Win/win

Everyone wants to feel special after all.

Going to be starting the facebook and SEO soon, but I really want about 10 or so really good links from these agents first.

That is it for now.

Subbed. I've been thinking of doing EXACTLY the same thing, so this is a real kick up the butt for me. Cheers

Good luck with your site and waiting for your SEO. And what do you mean 10 good links from agents ? Are you waiting for them to re-tweet your posts ? Sorry if it sounds lame :)

Good luck, I am in similar situation with my new blog (in a different niche).
Subbed like a mofo.

OK boy, girls and gay webmasters,

Finally time for a decent update on this site.

Firstly, I haven't been able to really work on this site like I've wanted to lately.

This is for a buncha personal reasons like ... I've got a baby on the way and my wife looks like she is literally about to pop any day now (3 weeks out)

We also replaced the carpet in the house and had a bunch of in-laws visit and then to top off all that...

...Diablo 3 came out and I wanted to soak up all the gaming goodness before 2am baby feedings.

So enough excuses, yall don't care about that... what has happened to the site?

Well, because of the personal things above I haven't really been diligent on the twitter strategy. So I am really getting back into that again and going to be sending some DMs to individual agents soon.

Now just because I haven't done much to the site doesn't mean I haven't done anything. (see below)

Since content only hasn't been ranking for shit I wanted to start some 'white hat' link building.

What does this mean for brands (in my mind)? - Press releases and directory submissions.

So for the press release I had my VA write up a like 500 word press release about the site. Things like when I launched the site and what the purpose of the site was and what visitors should expect from the site, etc, etc, and only had URL and or Brand.com anchor text in the PR.

I used SENuke to submit it to all the sites that SENuke X hits.

I did NOT spin the press release because I want our first links to be 'white hat' and since most PR submissions are moderated I wanted to make sure that each PR had the best chance to be accepted.

Is this best for SEO? No.

There are lots of advantages to spun content, but I didn't spin it because I don't think that a small business owner would have spun their press release.

Calling it 'white hat' isn't really what I'm trying to accomplish but rather I am trying to insure a good 'user experience'. Spun content reads like shit and is made for googlebot not users.

So i might still spam a bit but I'm trying to make sure that, at least starting out, all 1st tier links to my site are sticky, user approved, understandable, readable ... spam.

So that was the PR. I probably only got like 6 auto approve links out of that on buried pages, but google will eventually get to them and I know those links will still be there in like 6-8 months.

Not a very 'scalable' way to do SEO but we're doing this slow to start.

If you have the budget I suggest going with a major PR service like PRWeb.com or PRnewswire.com. I'm trying to keep costs down for now until I can get some income from the site.

One of the next things I did was bought me a good directory submission package.

I decided to go with g1c9's directory submission package. (no i didn't get a discount or anything for this)

So far using his method of finding links (search: URL.com "directory") post blast I've gotten 112 links showing up in Google. We'll see if more drip in later. This is what it looks like for now.

Good news is that this has given me a bit of domain diversity. Needed to cover up the blackhat part below =)

And then finally from that list I used the ole tumblr trick.

This is did with a combination of fiverr.com and some Sikuli bots I wrote.

Basically bought some premade tumblr accounts from fiverr.com (WAY more than I needed actually). Then I took one of the accounts and scraped 9gag.com (ugh) for a couple days and posted to the blog with some generic coment just to make sure it wouldn't get disabled.

I scraped a bunch of blog posts with PR with scrapebox. Threw those into a list and then once that was done I wrote a Sikuli reblogger bot.

So I've got some huge list of like 2k tumblr blog posts from PR 6 - 1 and while the blogs have a limit of 150 reblogs a day... I hit up the top 150 posts and reblogged them and the 301'd the tumblr blog to the site.

The tumblr account is generic (actually randomly generated username) anchor text but I think the high PR juice will be a good value to the site.

It might be a little black hat... but they are my best links yet.
Out of 41 backlinks found by majestic 18 of those have the username as the anchor text (aka are links from the tumblr redirect).

And then finally ... I let my VA get ahead of me with the content and so now I have about 7 or so posts to get up on the site.

I am going to schedule these and drip 1 a day.

After those posts go out it will be time to start monetizing the site.

Traffic is starting to roll in .... VERY slowly... for longtails (which after all was part of the plan remember), but it seems with the links starting to roll in Google is starting to evaluate the site and give it some traffic.

Thats it for now....

new expenses:
-$54 for the directory submission
-$5 for fiverr.com

Cost: -$319
Earnings: $0
Total -$319

Good luck with your site and waiting for your SEO. And what do you mean 10 good links from agents ? Are you waiting for them to re-tweet your posts ? Sorry if it sounds lame :)

No i was hoping that I'd be able to get 10 actual links from the Insurance Agents personal web page. And I'd still like too. But I first need to have 10 actual insurance agents interact with me on twitter =)

Taking care of this today too.

just searched 'insurance agent' followed them and @tweeted them some question that is in their profile or something. Like... "I see you bike. Would that help or hurt your life insurance rate with your company? =)"

Going to bump this thread for ya by asking:

What is your link building plan? I recently created a new site and a week later hit it with some socials and around 400 backlinks directly to my site all at once(lol). This got me deindexed(lol). I'm going to get a new domain and use this sandboxed domain as a redirect.

What kind of link building plan do you use to make sure this doesn't happen? haha
