One of my best friends just launched this non-profit: The Daya Project | Changing The Way We Travel

It's pretty awesome. Basically what it does is connect international travelers with communities and organizations in less fortunate parts of the world so that they can offer first-hand assistance.

For example, perhaps you are traveling to Costa Rica on vacation, and you want to earn some brownie points with God or the Karma Police or whatever it is you believe in, you could go to thedayaproject.org and see what is listed in that region. Maybe there is a children's hospital in the area that needs Tylenol real bad. You would then buy a few Costco sized boxes and take them with you and drop them off yourself. Pretty neat, right?

I'm helping him to populate the website, so if any of you have any leads whatsoever about specific places around the world with specific needs that we might be able to assist, please let me know.

You can also submit a project yourself: Submit a Project | The Daya Project

Thanks for reading!

TL;DR: You are ugly and nobody likes you.

Actually brilliant. How do they monetize? Also getting on an International flight with costco size boxes of Tylenol is going to be virtually impossible. ;)

Right now he is putting his own money into it. Eventually the plan is to operate on donations.

I've never tried to take a few boxes of Tylenol on an international flight, I guess you're right. But I'm sure they sell Acetaminophen all over the world?

What about Costa Rican import laws?

"Daya Project To Prison bro.

Well I'm not saying you should be smuggling palettes full of pills to foreign countries. Even one box would make a difference, in the above scenario.

And it's not always going to be drugs that are needed. Sometimes they just need a helping hand. Or some big ass bags of rice from down the road.

I think the concept is great. It's actually something I would seriously consider utilizing next time I travel.

But there has to be some serious legal and safety considerations.

How many of these groups registering could be a front for kidnapping? International crime targeting the wealthy is a serious consideration and I hope safeguards are considered to make sure shit like this won't go down.

If these two issues are sorted out, this project is gonna be big. With me, at least.

Have a couple thousand dog snuggies layin around? maybe we could somehow work that into this to keep their goats and chickens warm

Yeah, his lawyer already made him add this to the footer:

"YOUR USE OF THIS SITE IS AT YOUR OWN DISCRETION AND RISK.
THE DAYA PROJECT MAKES NO CLAIMS OR PROMISES ABOUT THE QUALITY, ACCURACY, OR RELIABILITY OF THE SITE, ITS SAFETY OR SECURITY, OR THE SITE CONTENT."

For now, since it's a small operation, it's easy to screen projects. Almost all of the ones on there now were submitted by people we actually know. But once it starts growing it will get trickier, I'm sure. But that is definitely something that will be a top priority.

You might want to relay to your friend that he should also be very careful about work permit immigration laws in various countries. I don't know about Costa Rica but in Thailand even volunteer work is considered work and you can be deported and fined for "working" while in Thailand without a work permit.

And, in Thailand, trust in projects like this is very low because so many people have used charities and volunteers for scams and-or commercial projects. I would imagine it's a very similar sort of thing in other developing countries.

Good concepts. Little help can be big. I will PM you shortly with my thoughts and request.

Cheers!

I believe you could get kidnapped or worst chopped your head off this way. Developing countries can be a very dangerous place especially for novice travelers. There are places that are poor because some people keep it that way and you don't want to mess with them.

With all due respect, richcam, it's a lot easier to come up with reasons not to do something than it is to actually try to make a difference.

This sounds pretty awesome. Good luck to your friend. I'm sure there will be tons of hurdles along the way, both in raising funds and legalities, but if they can get people to participate, a program like this could make a pretty sizable difference in some peoples lives.

Facebook page liked.

I really, really, really dislike that picture you have on the facebook page. Reminds me of those shitty infomercials that make you feel horrible for not doing something. It gives off the wrong vibe. Other than that. Good luck. Also not liking, until you change picture.
