Hey guys, I have a client who wants a lead gen site but the target audience is China.

Just wondering if anyone can recommend some good SEO services that work with simplified Chinese characters?

Also curious if anyone has any experience with ranking in Baidu vs Google? From what I understand Baidu is not as clever and easier to rank with spam, but it's all new to me so would like to get some tips from anyone who's tried it before...

Cheers
M

Nobody in China uses Google anymore, people can still access it but it gets blocked at random intervals every 5 minutes or so which makes it pointless to use unless you have a VPN. Google seo for china is pointless unless your main target is expats.

Baidu is all about money, find a chinese seo firm who has connections with them to rank you.

thanks onkelmicha, although i'll have to think twice about that reacharound.

con.mic - yeah I meant I know how to rank #1 in Google but never tried with Baidu, so wanted to know what was the best way.....have you had much experience? Can recommend anyone?

Baidu is mostly about spam, footer links work a treat. Chinese SEO is pretty dodgy and most don't get paid a lot over there, so it's easy to slip somebody $50 to get high PR links on educational domains for example.

That being said, unless you can speak the 5896754589748 different dialects of China you're going to struggle to find these opportunities (and even if you find them - you'll be paying white boy prices).

My suggestion? Look at a well spammed keyword (whatever the chinese equivalent of dick pills is) and then look at the backlink portfolio. You'll probably find a whole host of autoapprove link sources that you can use for your client.

Goodluck.

That is interesting, although i live here i never bother trying to rank anything on baidu. I always heard it is about paying the right people in Baidu to rank. China is so corrupt i thought that was true. I will have to give it a shot though, just for fun. Have you done much ranking before on it?

I know where to buy those hidden links and footer links though, the Chinese sell them to each other on Taobao.com

Nearly everyone in China speaks and understands Mandarin and all Chinese read in the same language. The main problem in China is receiving payment from Chinese people. They don't have international credit cards so it can be really tough unless you have a lot of money to open up a company which can receive payments in Chinese bank accounts.

Never tried to rank on Baidu because I don't speak Mandarin (nihao), I mostly just look at those search engines to keep an eye on the chinese scene (much like I do with yandex and Russia) for new linking methods. Not always easy to work it out, but sometimes you find new (english) sources which is nice.

Going to PM you about taobao, would definitely be interested in testing some paid chinese links :).
