He probably thought of it like ripping off a band aid, just get it over with. All decent sized new markets have those "investigative reporters" they use to pad slow news days. The reporter probably would have kept stalking him, ambushing him with a camera outside the grocery store, stuff like that, until he caved and the reporter got his story.

At least this minimized the amount of footage they had of him yelling "no comment" and running like a criminal.
