So I'm using UNF to research keywords and I'm wondering how accurate the competition analysis is. Like I'm finding a lot of longtails between 30-40 difficulty but when I search the front page is dominated by amazon, wikipedia, ehow, about.com etc. How hard is it to compete with these sites? I'm having trouble with the search function its giving me an error. Total noob here. Also how accurate is serpiq in determining difficulty of competition?

Pretty sure as long as your more SEO optimized (title, description, etc) and have more powerful back links than those pages (not domain) that are ranked then you should take them over.

It's usually not too difficult to beat out these types of sites as long as the your page has more links than theirs and is optimized for the keyword you are targeting.

Thats what i was thinking. I saw a serp iq of 50 for a 4 word longtail and got discouraged because I'm a noob but looking at the top 10, it seems that the age and pagerank of the authority domains inflated the serpiq score when their actual result pages have low pr and few backlinks. So it should be easier than it looks because I'm targeting the longtail and they are targeting the root kw?

Agreed, the age factor and authority factors are over rated, imo.

That's right, you just need more targeted links and better seo than them.

They are ranking there because Google saw the keyword somewhere for
them. However, it could also be said, that they are ranking there because
noone else it trying very hard.

Go get'em!

Yes it is entirely possible to beat out sites that are much bigger and older than you. But it can be very hard. You need good seo, good targeted links. Depending on how old, and how big the site is its probably going to take a while to achieve such a goal. Possibly 6 months? (if your starting from scratch)
