I've got a new site, in the sports niche, it's focused on a specific sports team. Traffic in the first month was pretty good around 14k uniques.

A sporting equipment website has offered to sponsor a competition on my site, basically they get a link and little review in exchange for some equipment that i can give away as a competition prize.

I'm having a hard time coming up with competition ideas. Ideally i want people to spread my URL around forums or other sports sites. I'm also gonna have everyone sign up for my newsletter to be eligible to win. Any ideas on a hook i could use to run a competition?

Thanks

Boobs, freebies or inflated round things always work for competitions.
Free inflated round boobs would be ideal.

On a serious note, you can ask people to make videos, send them to you, and the top 5 e.g. get a prize. Since team fans, actually means team fanatics, you can have them paint themselves with the teams colors or do other silly and barbaric things to demonstrate their inexplicable but profound devotion to the team.
If the team has a mascot, make them all create costumes and run around yelling the team anthems.

After the competition is over, make a youtube channel, upload all the videos and link from all of them to your site, and host the winning videos to your frontpage.

Didnt you watch Americas funniest home videos when growing up?

Find a funny picture related to the sport and have a funny caption competition.

UK sports fans are completely nuts. (no offense Shaun)
They invented the term "hooligans".
My angle is funnier and engaging.

Yours is:

1: "Keep rocking and stick to low resolution pics"
2: "We dont need no education"
3: "Rock and never grow up"

Vote for the best caption, and win a prize!

A couple more ideas...

Have people send in pictures of them, family, friends, etc... wearing their "fan gear"... but it must have your website name or the sponsors name appear in the picture somehow.

Guessing contest, perhaps about the score of an upcoming game or some type of Trivia. You could do a "guess how many soccer balls are in this pile" type of BS... the actual "pile" could be at the store, where you can enter a 2nd time.

The best thing to do is to make them create the content for you.

eg.
write an article about your favourite sports player
make a funny video
draw your favourite sports player

make em work fo the prize.

No offence taken :) Though fans are not as nuts as there were 20 years ago they are still very passionate.
