its been done before on here, but i have mine complete now and the old thread is ..somewhere

here is my setup a toshiba satellite laptop with alot of bells and whistles using a 42" as a primary and the laptop screen as secondary. 2 external 2 tb drives, bose companion II, cheap walmart cam, and some other odds and ends

and yes that is a actual MINI Minus Tirith atop the LOTR dvds

it's not even used properly...a tv for a main monitor is beyond stupid...TV resolution is not that high compared to a monitor, plus 1 big monitor is a lot less productive than two 22" or 24" monitors...and a lot less strain on the eyes...and then the 2nd monitor (the laptop) is too far away from the main monitor so you have to turn your head a lot...

the resolution of a 1080-capable TV is 1920x1080.. most large (24-26") monitors are 1920x1200 (16:10) or 1920x1080 (16:9).. 30" are 2560x1600..

the problem isn't the screen resolution dimensions but the dpi/ppi drop.

in pixels per inch:
his setup- 42 diagonal inches, 2073600 pixels (1920*1080, 16:9) = 52.45 ppi
dell 24" monitor- 24", 2304000 (1920*1200, 16:10) = 94.34
apple 30" monitor- 30", 4096000 (2560*1600, 16:10) = 100.63 (!)

the higher PPI the better clarity you can achieve. using a TV as a monitor = blurfest. if you can't see it, put a good monitor (dell ultrasharp, apple cinema) next to it and check again.

if you want bigger text, use the UI scaling in windows.. my wife runs at 150% on her 17" laptop
