I would like to formally congratulate Chicago on its recent accomplishment: 500 homicides in 2012.

Clearly, the city's (draconian) gun legislation is having a positive effect on the safety of its residents. Nicely done, Chicago.

Good write up, Jake. It boggles my mind every day that average people, even otherwise smart folks like dchuk here, defend or want to expand gun laws when it is clear as day that the more gun laws exist, the more they place themselves specifically at risk.

The bottom line on the subject though is that governments can't ever give you the right to own guns. This is clearly an inalienable right, like the right to own food or even breath air. Governments should NEVER have the right to take anyones' gun away, especially since governments are the most likely group of thugs to go bad one day and use this power against you.
 
Meanwhile in Canada with strict gun control Toronto only had 53.

I'm mostly pro gun but just playing the devil's advocate. The population of the two cities is almost the same. 2.7 million (Chicago) vs. 2.6 million (Toronto). There's obviously something else at work here.

Poor people killing other poor people. The issue is a sociological one, not a gun control one.

It's not like it's 500 Gerber babies being killed.

Actually what you're seeing is the result of huge power vacuums in the gangs and drug trade.

When the Chicago Housing Authority and the Department of Housing and Urban Development razed all of the projects (aside from the Dearborn Homes) all of the drug empires that were ruled from the projects were scattered about the city. The end result being project gang-bangers fighting for turf with the street hustlers and street gangs that already claimed that turf.

While it's not an acceptable murder rate (as if there is one?), it's far cry from the 900 homicides in 1992.

Really?

Race? That's your answer... How did the Asians get to Toronto? Because the blacks came up as poor Southerners looking for factory work. Not exactly your educated or dedicated immigrant class. (Chicago has a huge diaspora of Africans who are primarily hard-working and law abiding, it's no wonder that the "blacks" that everyone says are naturally violent have a history deeply rooted in poverty founded in slavery.)

I forgot how naive WF can be, oh btw... For that pro guns argument... Murders were nearly DOUBLE what they are now in Chicago when handguns were legal.

I mean, who would of thought that more guns would mean more murders?!

ok two scenarios:
a) gangster against victim without gun
b) ganster against victim with gun

Are you saying that b is more likely to end up without death?
I mam saying that in a case gangster will shoot only if he premeditated it, otherwise he would just scare victim without gun, while in b case he would see victim with gun and would more likely shoot to him/her.

That's not politically correct, you damn racist. It's obvious that being around white people that causes blacks to behave in such a manner. As you will note in Toronto which also has a high minority population they behave similarly around whites.

Oh shit wait, no they don't. Clearly the data is skewed with obvious racist intentions. When you look at the cities with the highest black demographic and lowest white population you will notice that blacks are much more civilized, industry and cities are booming and everyone is living in a peaceful bliss not being around the evil white man.
