Every country in the world managed to get rid of slavery (many before the USA) without a huge war. It may have taken another 10-20 years, which truly is a horrifying thought, but are the millions dead, and the loss of states rights in the civil really worth a few less years of slavery?

Yup.* Moreover, the institution wasn't economically viable, despite civic religion laying the blame on capitalism and the market. Slavery was profitable to some, but that's a different thing altogether. For example, the Fed Reserve is profitable to some.

As for the connection between the Civil War and slavery, well... I'll leave that alone. Suffice to say, that which is taught in state schools is inconsistent with historical records.
