I'm like 99% against cops, but this was all warranted.
Blindly shooting into a van full of kids isn't warranted. Even if this was a hostage scenario and the driver was firing on the police you don't shoot into a van full of children.
I'm not saying the mother didn't react foolishly.
I noticed a comment elsewhere that the video is edited, that she was issued a citation and was free to go until the officer decided to pull her over again and force her to see a judge immediately or pay the citation on the spot.
Not sure if that's true or not, but she did pull back over immediately. At that point she wasn't trying to evade - and seemed to be confused, like she thought she was free to go.
As for the kid attacking the cop - he's reacting to a thug who intends to harm his mother. It's hard to fault him for that. If you take the badge out of the equation anyone is going to react to anyone initiating violence against their mother.
At this point the cop has shown intent to use the taser (which could easily be confused for a gun) on the kid. And then he smashes the back window, spraying glass all over her children.
Any mother would be terrified in that spot, and you'd instinctively get your kids out of harms way ASAP. Once someone initiates violence (smashing windows with a club) you don't assume they'll stop.
So she takes off, and the cops start shooting. Ignore everything up until that point and put yourself in that position. If you have your family in a car and there are people shooting at you do you stop or do you drive away as fast as possible?
She drove to a public place where she probably felt it was less likely that they were going to put 100 rounds into the vehicle and herself/children in the process - and surrendered.
Did she act irrationally? Maybe.
It'd be tough not to, especially if you come from a background where you see cops for what they are - people who recklessly initiate violence and pose a very real threat to everyone that they come in contact with - and you fear for the safety of your family.
But at no point did she initiate violence. The cops initiated violence.
Regardless of the situation, no - just no - there's no rationalization for anyone to open fire on a minivan filled with kids.
