I used Create your Google Sitemap Online - XML Sitemaps Generator to create a site map for my website.
I also have a 301 redirect in place to redirect index.html to my root domain.
The weird thing is when I make a html site map, the index and the root domain name still show up as two pages.
Is this normal?
Should I worry about google seeing this as duplicate content when the redirect works fine?
Thanks in advance

301 redirect is not understood by sitemaps. Its a technology for search engines and browsers only. Sitemaps include each and every page of your website. So it is normal.

No google will not treat this as a duplicate content. Google does not cache all the files from the sitemap. Its not that simple. Sitemaps are used to get indexed not cached. Duplicate content is only a worry when the documents are cached. Since you are 301 redirecting your index, it wont be cached when spider visits your site. So no worries....

A1 Sitemap Generator (as with most other sitemappers) will recognize redirects...

A1SGl also defaults to recognize example.com/index.html as duplicate of example.com/ even without a redirect (this behavior can be disabled in the few cases where the two URLs actually are unique)
