I have been working on creating a few profile pictures for people and am having some issues with the quality.

Facebook max. image dimensions. = 180px X 540px (I use 300dpi PS-CS5)

The problems that I am having is that alot of the pictures are getting distorted when I import them in and font's are very difficult to place in the image because at those dimensions your font size is around 6 pt. It also show alot of pixels around the edges of the text. Making the whole image not look profesional.

What can I do to resolve this? I was thinking about increasing all dimension X 3 so 540 X 1620. Build the graphic in that size and when I am done shrink the size back down.

Any ideas or feedback would be greatly appreciated :)

The distortion occurs owing to the fact you're using extreme DPI resolutions which stretches in your Image Manipulation software. (Hopefully Photoshop here)

DPI is irrelevent when displaying images online.

Web browsers show the ACTUAL pixels and the DPI is nothing more than an instruction that is used when an image is printed. A web browser doesn't care and just displays the image at screen resolution - usually 72-96dpi.

The easiest way to prove this is to resize 2 images to 500 pixels and set 1 to 72 dpi and the other to 300dpi and put them both on a web page - they will be displayed at exactly the same size of 500pixels. However, the size of the image will go huge!

The reason those images are distorting is because they're low resolution raster images and are not meant to be stretched. Only vector graphics can be stretched.
