Creating my own Google ranking tracker script. Advice?

Not to be a dick, but that's extremely high level stuff when it comes to programming.

Good point, that's not the adjective I was looking for. :Yahoo_29:

In fact, they're so abstracted to a high-level that user authentication boils down to abstract "logged_in?" calls and scraping involves abstract methods like "search('//h3/a').text". That there are so many high-level solutions for them allow you to focus on other app logic.

In fact, the things I'm working on now like caching is probably even more low-level.

Thanks for the words of encouragement, backlinkgurus. :tongue2:

...I was hoping you'd write something more interesting, technical, and in lieu of this thread than words of discouragement.

Lol the "advice" was meant to be more general in nature. I just see so many "SEOs" writing their own tools and they turn out kind of shitty and they aren't even that successful at SEO in the end. Just an observation that some times by being a jack of all trades you are a master of none as the saying goes.

As far as any specific technical advice, obviously I can't offer that. :spawn:

If it's simply a programming exercise, I would suggest using the skills you have learned from this so far and applying it to an aspect of the SEO world not yet saturated. Then at the end of your endeavor you can make bank more easily. I can give you a few ideas and if you write something halfway good I'll partner with you (take all the credit :) j/k)
