I've never been on a cruise, but I'm interested in going on a few. Just wondering if anyone else is a fan of cruises or if they blow? I want an easy way to go on a fast "vacation" and pay for it all in one spot without having to figure out hotels/planes/cars/etc. Any advice/tips/experiences?

Only if they have a casino with table games. The first day you feel like complete shit from the sea sickness and then you will be watching these theatrical performance every evening. The food is decent.

I just gambled the whole time, helped pass time and it was good.

It can be good or can be bad. DO NOT GO ON CARNIVAL...it's like a floating wal mart (think peopleofwalmart.com).

I've enjoyed both Norwegian and Royal Carribean. Royal was really fun because it was very activity oriented. They had a surfing machine, dodgeball tournaments, rock climbing and other sports oriented stuff on the sports deck. The shows were good and the food was decent.

Norwegian was more relaxing oriented but they also have activities.

You won't get more bang for the buck then a cruise. Also, I sleep like a baby in inside cabins because its so dark. They are the "worst" rooms but i'm telling you I sleep better there then in balcony suites on cruises.

I once went on a cruise with my parents as a kid. They feed you all hours of the day and night. I counted: there were 12 meals a day available on the itinerary. There's no rule you have to eat 12x a day, but just saying.

My parents took a cruise on Holland America lines, and my fitness-conscious father didn't eat more than normal. Steward asked my mother if he's sick. LOL True stories, bro.

Princess is really nice but more an older crowd.
Royal Caribbean was almost as nice, younger, and just as fun.

I agree what was said about Carnival too, NEVER go on one of them. We went to a wedding on one once and it was BORING, dull, and the employees acted like wal-mart employees too.

I've never been sea sick, and I've been through some very high sea where when walking down the hall you could be shifted into the wall if you aren't paying attention. Pool water sloshing around, etc... fun times

Be sure to plan your shore excursions ahead of time as they often do sell out. You can often do more than 1 of them in 1 day. IE: Drunken boat ride + beach party + walk around down town all in 1 day.

You should be spending 0 time in your room so I wouldn't spend much $ upgrading, we only went to our rooms to change clothes and crash for the night.

When I think of a cruise I think of hot weather, Caribbean fun... I've not done any of those "cold" cruises where swimming, beaches, etc are not involved. If you are going to the caribbean be sure to look at the dates and pick a good time when the weather will be hot, and enjoyable and not rainy stormy and overall miserable. YOu`ll probably still get a little rain a day or two but it won't suck.

Oh, and 7 day minimum. Any shorter and it feels rushed.

If you have sea sickness you're fucked. I heard so many bad stories of people being sick the whole time.

The only cruise I'm really interested in is the one that goes to Antarctica from Ushuaia (southern Argentina). The scenery is breathtaking and you feel like you're in another universe. Antarctica is a place I always wanted to visit. I heard the Russians opened a pretty awesome vodka bar down there too...

I personally love it, but it is a matter of personal preferences.

This is how I'd describe my experience on Royal Caribbean (we booked a sweet with wrap around balcony on the back of the whip)

It is a floating city with constant entertainment, food and pampering. They have someone who will literally enter your room 2 or 3 times per day, and tidy everything up. If you need anything, they will bend over backwards to please you.

You get to meet people from all over the world. When you get off at a port, it is awesome, you don't even need to worry about your passport (they give you a card to get on and off the ship). Generally on vacation, I take care of all the logistics, so being able to just sit back and enjoy the ride was a big win.

I have clear memories of sipping champagne while watching the most amazing sunset, and a huge school of dolphins were passing by.

If you are easily seasick, forget about it, it can move quite a bit (at one point we were going fast to get somewhere, and the ship was rocking back and forth quite heavily).

If you are looking for adventure off the beaten path, then this is not for you (I like that too, but everything has it's time and place)

If you are looking to relax, be pampered and get to know ports in different places without any worry or stress, the experience is beyond awesome.

I thought it was gay as AIDS. But it might depend more of what ship you are on and what they have. The main goal is to extract as much money from you as they can. All the destinations they stop at they are affiliated with. So you basically have to walk a ways to get out of their tourist trap.

The drinks are weak as fuck. The buffet food sucked. The sit down dinner they did every night was fairly good.

A lot of it might come down to how the weather is too. Obviously you probably don't want to be cooped up in the ship the whole day. We did have to skip a stop because of bad weather.

Overall I feel like it's a rip off and totally would not do it again.

It would help if you shared what cruise line you were with, and what area you cruised to visit ;)

By far Princess has the BEST food.

I'd also throw in try to stay on the newer ships if you can.

I think it's hard to beat a cruise for a relaxing no thought vacation.
Just don't get drunk and miss the boat when it leaves port ;)

I've never seen the attraction of spending a holiday on a boat in the ocean. Yes I know you stop off at various ports for a day or so, but personally I'd sooner be on land where it's far easier to fuck off when you're bored shitless from the same site of waves every day.

If I did go on one, I'd just be getting hammered and in the casino for the majority of the time probably.

based off of everyone's experiences, sounds like I won't be going on a cruise any time soon.

I cannot imagine any thing worse and I'm going to support my opinion on this matter with rich media:

pick a good line

rule of thumb is the shorter 3/4 day cruises is where they use the older ships and newer staff

7/10 day cruises amenities are much nicer

i've been on spme terrible cruises amd some great ones

Well I had no idea at the time what I was getting myself in to. It was my BFFs dad's (but not real dad's) wedding. And it was taken care of.

Anyways I think it was Carnival. We went out of Miami to the Bahamas. The best thing about the Bahamas was trying to score some Cuban cigars. Two of our group signed up to go swimming with the dolphins at the Atlantis resort, and they had a horrible time just even trying to get there.

The next stop was some private island owned by Carnival, which we had to skip due to weather. It was too choppy to dock. That day really sucked ass.

The last stop was the Florida Keys.

Honestly the other cruise ships we would see docked did look a lot better than ours. I've seen some of the newer ones and they do look sweet as hell. Still you're stuck on this fucking tin can for a few days and I wouldn't do it again regardless of line.
