Cuil - New SE from former Google employees

I've been fooling around with Cuil since Saturday.
I agree on the results sucking a lot, but then I also noticed a few things

  • Search terms that have a .com or other TLD domain that IS THE SEARCH TERM may not make it to first place - This sucks a lot, but if your domain is all about marketing a product, it may actually be less relevant to what people are actually looking for (be honest here). As such, it may prove more useful to some people
  • A very large number of returns for me were old domains, and usually from the academic (not necessarily .edu) or social spheres (and I don't mean blogs or social-media sites) of the net - I pulled a lot of academic papers, a lot of 3+ year old forums and even sources like QDB. Perhaps the Cuil algorithm is designed more to look for information it trusts as being established informational content, rather than information pertaining to commerce?
  • Converesly, I found very few sites based on commerce - Is Cuil attempting to be an information specific search engine that does not favour, or even disfavours, commercial activity?
One specific site I know to be the only one of its kind in Aus and was the .com.au of the search term appeared down the bottom, whilst other sites, including ones from academics, got higher results.
  • It appears to ignore PR value of links, and focused more on domain age and number of links. Probably make it easier to game, until they tweak that.
  • There is no geo-specific favouring in results
I had a few more points that were sort of light-bulb moments for me, but I've forgotten them. I'll write them down when they come back to me.

Might that be because PR is an internal measurement specific to Google that Cuil can't access? and that it's based around domain age and number of links?

I think indeed it might be and that PageRank(tm) is the key patent that got Google going and what others have tried to work around for years.

Figures as much... but having been people that worked on parts of Google's algo, you'd think they'd maybe create something similar (yet different enough to avoid patent infringement).
So I guess they're making their own new algo because Google gets pretty relevant results... and Cuil does not...

So much hating, these guys are just a couple of weeks old . Every google drinking, ppc loving mofo are hating on these guys. Come on realistically Google didn't own 70 of the search revenue overnight and for these guys to start up the way they did, kudos to them. They have along way to go but its always nice to see that theres someone out there willing to kick some ass. :)
