Damn that poker thread.

So the more I sit here thinking about this the more pissed off I get. How the hell could I not even control my impulses for a single week? I mean, even at mirco limits, where I might as well be using play money, I still have the desire to go blow it all at once. I convinced myself that I could do it for a week (and then I was going to withdraw or blow it), but didn't even pull that off... and apparently my brother knows me better than I do, because he won the bet.

That last graph I posted just makes it so crystal clear. You can actually see the point where I said "fuck it, let's just blow this shit real quick and then go to taco bell, i've got better things to do" (which is the exact same thing I did when it was $30k). And it pisses me off because that chart could represent a million different things. Small, pathetic things, that I should be able to do (stop drinking soda, stop eating out, work out more, etc).

I used to think I was in total control of my emotions and could do anything I put my mind to, no matter how much it sucked... but now, not so much.

Anyway, does anyone know of any good books on the subject (hell, I'm not even sure what the subject is)? I'm talking about learning to control your emotions and having better will power.

###

And just because this is on a new page and people might not want to go back to see the chart I'm talking about:

I don't know of any books on this, but I do know that with a lot of the things you are talking about more of a structured day can help, and getting in to routines. I think a lot of people that work for themselves have these types of problems as you can work whenever you want to, but this is often at the expense of other stuff.

Take going to the gym for example, just set a time every day to go, and try to keep it up for say 2 weeks, after that it should become a lot easier, and a month or so down the line it will be a normal part of your day.

Don't know about stopping the poker though, I have similar problems sometimes on games :)

Read Zen and the art of poker by Larry W Phillips. I "borrowed" it from the bookstore and I liked it, talks about folding, controlling tilt, etc etc.

Maybe it will help your game?

Today I'm down 10 buyins, so I decide to cash out the remaining money to buy a balling computer mouse. Fuck yeah.

Feels good man.

Turbo, I think, had the most logical response to this thread. Take a certain amount per time, and train yourself not to spend over that amount before you even think about gaming it away. If you only agree to spend a maximum of ten dollars per day, and you can profit as much as you did in the above graph before you blew it all away, you could be banking bigtime.

And if you want to up the maximum that you can bet per day, only go by at most a dollar per day.

Actually, fuck everything I just said, I know nothing about bigtime poker, just know how to play the basics of the game.

But mad props to you, Subigo, for actually making this thread and trying to figure out how to better yourself as far as poker-related gambling is concerned. Fixing problems for the win.

Fixed.

I was a lot like you when i played a lot and still am the same way. i can't grind out lower limits because i think its boring and if im making a bunch of money online i can afford to play high stakes where it gets interesting.

But the thing is online poker in the last year or so has really dryed up. Most of the fish are long gone and the ones still left are being hunted by so many sharks its tough to get your share.

Its possible but if your going to try and play higher stakes you best come prepared because you'll find nothing but sharks and top players with the occasional fish. They wait for someone like you. Either way if you wanna be serious about playing higher stakes educate yourself as much as you can. You can get lucky as you have proven yourself. But skill always outlasts luck.

lol... The really funny part is I just lost a $250 bet to my brother who said I wouldn't last 10 days before I gambled it away on higher stakes.

Can you see how irrational this is? Betting $250 you can stop gambling?

Some people can have a couple of drinks and have a good time. Some try to drink the bar dry and still have a rotten one.

You might consider you have a gambling problem. Shrewd investors make calculated bets on outcomes they can predict accurately and know when to quit. Chronic gamblers only stop when their money is all gone.

The trick is learning how to exploit the regs :) A lot of them are very competent, yet very exploitable, especially at the mid-stakes. 400NL especially is just so over the top aggro that you will have an edge by just playing very solid poker. There are still a huge number of fish though, don't be fooled by the hype of the fish pond drying up :P

To the OP, that's pretty tough dropping $33k in one evening. Were you playing higher than 25/50? I am such a huge bankroll nit that I like to have at least 40-50 buy-ins for my level to offset variance.

Get a good poker coach if you're serious about playing, it's definitely +EV as often times a third party perspective is what you need to plug leaks in your game.

I'm sure the op doesn't want to invest 8 grand into poker, which is the necessary BR for 400nl. And no, you will not be profitable here long term merely playing "solid poker". By solid, I'm assuming you mean fit/fold, and you'll get torn a new asshole playing like that at 2/4.

Heh, no, I didn't mean fit/fold. That's pretty weak/tight, not solid. By solid I meant not totally spewy like some regs at 400nl.

So here's my final update on this thread...

I played again, just $30, and bumped it up to $300 in a few days. I decided to withdraw that money to buy an xbox 360... and what does Full Tilt do? Refuse to pay me of course. They said I violated their TOS by having 2 accounts, even though I was the one who emailed them about having 2 accounts (opened one in 2004 and forgot about it... then opened another a few months ago).

And finally, just to top it off, I checked my mail a few minutes ago and got a letter from my bank saying they will close my account if they see any other "gambling related transactions".

At least I have Modern Warfare 2 to take the place of poker.

Lol, it just wasn't meant to be :)

Damn this poker thread. I just lost $60. I should deposit $50, let one of you winners play, and split the winnings. Sheesh
