Deciding a College Major?

heed my earlier advice if you want to be of any help to the resistance, so that we can stand a chance against the machines when the war begins. you know, if that matters to you.

yea and how many people out of 300 million can get to that status? if you gonna get to that status then ill stop preaching.

Yeah you wouldn't want to - that's why they have all collectively donated more than $100M+ to the nation's top universities....'cause they are stupid and don't know where to put their money right??? They like throwing away money because college is stupid and they want to demonstrate exactly how stupid by giving their hard earned money to things that don't matter - FTW !!

amazing way to look at it pal, seriously, the way you put it you can honestly study some BS like women's studies and be able to monetize that without a job.

Honestly, that's exactly what I mean. Go to google and type in "women's studies" and you will see how much traffic it gets.

Believe it or not there are hundreds of thousands of people in the world interested in women's study or whatever kind of obscure subject you pick.

Have you ever read Robert B Cialdini's Books "Psychology of Persuasion" [ame="http://www.amazon.com/Influence-Psychology-Persuasion-Robert-Cialdini/dp/0688128165"]Robert B. Cialdini's Book "Psychology of Persuasion"? [/ame](not an aff link...)

Ask anyone making at least $300k plus online and you will be hard pressed to find someone who hasn't read this book or at least heard of it...

Turn to chapter 6 "Authority: Directed Deference". One of the central points here is how we in society are hardwired to "believe" (however foolishly) what authorities tell us and in this case schooling=authority.

So you get your degree in women's study's basket weaving or whatever.
You set your blog, directory, or whatever.

Only you have a degree in the bs subject and you stand out from all your peers online.

I have seen this work time and time again. The point is you are doing what you love and when you read that book you will see what I mean.

I'm currently a freshmen in college and am having trouble deciding upon a college major. I have thought about many possibilites, and have done research on a lot of careers. Although if there is some nice career websites/ earning salaries/ career outlook whatever I will take a look.

I have though about psychology - too competitive to get into grad school, pseudoscience, have to get a Phd to do anything with it

Thought about computer science - too much math, career outlook is bad, dont want to sit in front of a computer my whole life

thought about political science - not sure what i would do with this

thought about english - travel the world and write about my adventures, dont need a degree to do this, don't want to be involved in acadamia

currently thinking about biochemistry - i want to do environmental science but my college does not offer an undergraduate degree for it, I want to do something with environmental science or hydrology, career outlook is really good, intresting subject, prepared to get a masters. my dad majored in environmental science, not sure if i want to follow in his footsteps or not

any suggestions are appreciated

wow end your life now if you listen to what others say. How the fuck do you know job outlook is bad? If you actually look into it, CS is the major with the best and most plentiful jobs available. Starting pay is well within $60k at least. As a junior pursuing a CS major myself, I can say with 100% certainty that CS will only get bigger.

You will end up staring at a computer screen all day regardless of what you do.

I'm in CS for the fact that it has very little math, not sure where you learned it has a lot of math. Especially compared to something like chemistry. Well I suppose it could have 1 or 2 more math classes, but they are going to be way easier (stats, discrete, etc.) than all the calc you have to take for chemistry.

Well, since you asked for our advice . . . I would recommend declaring anything you want for your undergraduate major. Once you have a high school diploma, and a bachelor's degree, you are going to be competitive enough to get past the "gate keepers" in the human resources departments for most jobs. In my opinion the real test comes when you are ready for your master's degree. That's where you narrow down your focus and get a chance to really shine with your knowledge, skills, and abilities. I'm not big on school, so I would only say that going for your doctorate is not necessary unless you need it as a job requirement (teaching at a college, research scientist, etc.).

Good luck on some of the best years of your life! Have some fun while learning.

oh boy that's tough desicion! That's why I finished high school and went traveling like a hippie. I didnt know what to do! So here I am at 26 years old applying to FIT in NYC. At least I know now that this what I want. Only you can know. psychology is definitely a great choice. Just put lots of love into it and you can do it. I feel jealous when I see those doctors with their fine houses, while working in their office at home... ! Good luck on whichever carreer you choose.
