How do you develop your strategy? Do you brainstorm on your own? Does your AM help you? Do you just copy others (as was suggested to me when I first started)?

I find myself at an impasse. I have a couple of (poorly-performing) direct-linking campaigns going and am having a hard time figuring out which way to go from here. I created those direct-linkers to get a lay of the land and figure out how things work (creating ads on various sites, setting up tracking with prosper, etc) but I need to do something new now and I don't want to keep pouring money into a black hole...

I also fear that I lack the skills/resources/experience to perform good research so that I can recognize good opportunities to exploit. Any pointers there would be helpful too.

Thoughts?

Dude, I know just what you mean. I am just starting to realize that you can't really have a "strategy" for more than a few days in this business, because you learn something better and new and wham... you change everything. Or allot of times I just get bored with a tool and then want to do something different for a while. I think I finally have a strategy that I can stick to, but I fill in the "tactics" differently every day...

1. Put up new original content
2. Get external links to the content
(could be ppc, or free)
3. Get mailing list sign ups and sell affiliate programs via the content

Thats it and I just wing it. Like this morning I was determined to start a bookmarking campaign and then I saw that my music site got a new directory listing that got me 25 hits in one day...more than any other referral link ever got me. So hours later I am now hooking up reciprocals at directories again. You have to learn, experiment and implement.
