Ya know, I'm starting to like this guy. Not like in a homo way, but in a "hey could I borrow your lawnmower" kind of way.

I've never really understood the blind hatred towards him tbh, he's always seemed like a fairly likeable guy.

Imo, this is one of the very few Matt Cutts videos I've watched that I've actually found interesting. Makes sense that they wouldn't base rankings of individual sites on the quality raters, and just use it as a nice way to check the algorithm's working properly.
 
interesting! i had previously thought that the quality reviewers would review a site and apply a manual penalty if needed. But now I see that this is not correct.

But wait a second...

In that latest "ex google search quality team" guy interview, didn't he say they would manually go through sites that had been flagged and even go through their backlink profile manually and then apply a penalty if need be??

I was mostly busy with content quality and back link profile, making decisions on the quality of pages and the links pointing to them and if needed, applying a penalty based on the severity and nature of the violating behaviour.
