How is this different than directory listings?

You need to have an adress to list on most of these sites. There are solutions such as virtual addresses and shared office spaces. These are directory listings of sorts. They are optimized business listings on sites that rank such as Yelp, merchantcircle, insiderpages, showmelocal etc. Check out the post How To Dominate Local Search... posted above for more info.
