Each of these facts has been demonstrated over the past 20 years by many economists and other researchers. The effects are not small: one study showed that an American worker who was among the bottom one-seventh in looks, as assessed by randomly chosen observers, earned 10 to 15 percent less per year than a similar worker whose looks were assessed in the top one-third — a lifetime difference, in a typical case, of about $230,000 ...

Why this disparate treatment of looks in so many areas of life? It’s a matter of simple prejudice. Most of us, regardless of our professed attitudes, prefer as customers to buy from better-looking salespeople, as jurors to listen to better-looking attorneys, as voters to be led by better-looking politicians, as students to learn from better-looking professors. This is not a matter of evil employers’ refusing to hire the ugly: in our roles as workers, customers and potential lovers we are all responsible for these effects ...

A more radical solution may be needed: why not offer legal protections to the ugly, as we do with racial, ethnic and religious minorities, women and handicapped individuals?

That's right: physical aspect is very important in our very prejudiced world.

Blond, tall, caucasians are considered high achievers in the western civilization.

In other cultures, depending on what is considered "attractive" the same rule applies.

You might have the law, but culture (emotion) will always come first.

In a brick and mortar business you have to have good looks to succeed. If you don't you are in trouble.

Do you view all those screen commercials: all the actors are physically attractive.

In our culture women are an asset, specially beautiful ones.

But luckily for online marketers, this physical asset is greatly reduced.

You can be the ugliest person in the world and still have great success, if you don't post your picture.

Online you need marketing strategies expertise no matter your looks, You can be the most beautiful person and be a complete failure online.

online you can even work naked, with bad breath, soiled. Buyers won't see those "imperfections".

Yeah, this is pretty common knowledge. I feel like my looks have gotten me places (work-wise) in the past. It gives me a little extra confidence when trying to get a job that I may not be qualified for...especially if you know statistically speaking that the odds are in your favor.
 
The epitome of the extreme liberal mindset. I personally think there is not enough discrimination against ugly people in American society. We should bring Russian style face control to our dance clubs for one. Too ugly? Then you're not getting in no matter what kind of fucking outfit you're wearing.
 
While there are beautiful people based on bone structure, there's a lot of non-beautiful people who could be beautiful based on things such as their body fat % and things like chronic inflammation of their nasal airways which leads them to having unnatural facial proportions

So I think people should look into how holding weight on your face as a man is literally unnatural and can make you a 3/10 when you really could be a 7/10, and that might just be 30lbs depending on your test/estrogen balance and bone structure(the test/estrogen ratio determines where the body fat goes, IIRC).

People should also look into nasal inflammation caused by allergies(also leads to water retention in the face for me) I remember when I did a fast for three days to 'cleanse my system' and couldn't believe how different my face looked after. It was pretty huge change

(this is an off topic ramble I guess -- I just want us people lower than a 5 on the 1-10 attraction scale to realize there could be things other than bone structure that are putting us low)
 
I used to be young and good looking. Now I'm turning into an f'ing old troll - not the internet kind that lives in their parents' basement, the hideous medieval kind that lives under a bridge. Good thing I've got money now, being lazy I don't have to hustle anymore and I'm too ugly to do it anyway.

So what subsidies are available to me to cash in on being old and ugly?

Some of you are missing the point of the article. The point is not that ugly people have fewer opportunities. The author's point is that ugly people need legal protection from discrimination.

Example: you own a restaurant. An ugly woman is allowing her brats to use the place as their personal playground. You tell the woman to control her brats. She yells, "DISCRIMINATION BECAUSE I'M UGLY!"

Example: you're the owner of a small business who needs to hire an accountant. There are two candidates. One is ugly. You pick the other candidate. The ugly one argues, "That's discrimination because I'm ugly. I'm gonna sue!"

Example: you want to buy a product that is offered by two vendors. One vendor is good-looking, and makes a great product. The other vendor is ugly, and makes a so-so product. Despite the same costs of production, the ugly one charges far less. How? She gets an "ugly subsidy" from the state (part of protecting that class, you see).

We actually already do offer such protections in a few places, including in some jurisdictions in California, and in the District of Columbia, where discriminatory treatment based on looks in hiring, promotions, housing and other areas is prohibited. Ugliness could be protected generally in the United States by small extensions of the Americans With Disabilities Act. Ugly people could be allowed to seek help from the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and other agencies in overcoming the effects of discrimination. We could even have affirmative-action programs for the ugly.

I wanna be on the committee to decide who's ugly. That might well be the most coveted job in America, if it ever came to exist. Being a good looking female offers a world of opportunity to become a network affiliate manager. Ugly females don't rank a single golden meatspin at these places. OTOH, male affiliate managers can be ordinary looking or downright ugly.
